Did Rick and Morty Just Hint at One Piece? Let’s Dive into This Epic Moment!

🚨 Caution: The information below reveals details from the “Nomortland” episode of Rick and Morty. You can watch it on September 1st with an HBO Max membership, but beware of potential spoilers!

In my opinion, Season 8 of “Rick and Morty” might be the best the show has ever produced, and watching the latest episode that referenced a show I frequently watch on Netflix only strengthens this belief. Given that I’m currently immersed in an anime and eager for the live-action Season 2 of “One Piece” to debut, it’s impressive how my favorite comedy series acknowledges and pays tribute to such a cherished series.

As a die-hard movie fan, I’m thrilled to share my take on “Nomortland.” In this intriguing tale, our beloved character, Jerry, gets the chance to cut loose in the Multiverse. He stumbles upon a counterpart who figured out how to traverse dimensions through a peculiar glitch hidden in Beth’s wardrobe.

Together, they embark on an exhilarating journey along “The Road,” where we cross paths with a gang of Jerrys who assert ownership over the passageways. To escape their clutches and ensure Jerry’s safe return to his reality, we must dodge them deftly.

Throughout our escapades, we catch a glimpse of a sign within the “Bandana Jerrys'” compound that subtly tips its hat to the iconic pirate series, One Piece. Keep your eyes peeled!

In a gallery of images labeled as “forbidden Jerrys,” there’s one picture featuring a Jerry donning a straw hat and sporting a large “X”-like scar on his chest. Although this character might not be identical to the Luffy portrayed by Iñaki Godoy, he shares a striking resemblance with the anime version, particularly in regard to the scar that appeared later in the storyline. Additionally, this Jerry has a scar below his eye, which corresponds to the self-inflicted wound Luffy made in the manga as a demonstration of bravery before joining Shanks’ crew.

In my casual viewing of Rick and Morty, I didn’t intentionally search for One Piece references; however, now that I’ve noticed some characters resembling Chopper or other Straw Hat pirates, I’ll pay closer attention in future episodes. Given the show’s tendency to reference popular culture frequently, it might be a rare occurrence, and we may not see another One Piece allusion for quite some time.

I find it intriguing to consider that there might be a character resemblance between Jerry and Monkey D. Luffy from One Piece, or perhaps he’s an ardent admirer of this popular anime. Given Jerry’s typical behavior, I lean towards the latter interpretation, implying he’s a devoted fan of one of the most engaging anime series for viewers to enjoy.

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast who has a soft spot for anime, it’s evident that some “Rick and Morty” fans share this passion. So, it’s not really shocking that an anime spinoff emerged from the show’s universe. You see, Toonami – a beloved programming block on Cartoon Network – played a significant role in introducing anime to American audiences. Given that “Rick and Morty” is currently the most popular animated series in the Western world, it seems fitting that it would acknowledge such a globally acclaimed anime series.
