Did Sony Just Quietly Cancel 28 Years Later’s Final Movie?

The recent film 28 Years Later was a big hit in theaters, but there’s a chance the story could have ended after just two movies, even though a third film has been announced. This possibility is fueled by promotions for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. The first 28 Years Later movie, released in 2025, continued the story from 28 Days Later and 28 Months Later, focusing on how the UK was handling the ongoing infection. 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple followed shortly after, revealing that some of the infected were becoming more intelligent and evolving.

The main issue is a recent social media post from the official 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple X account. It included a brief teaser and the message: “Cancel your plans. Grab your snacks. Gather at The Bone Temple. Witness the ending you’ve been waiting 28 years for – #28YearsLater: The Bone Temple is now on Digital and in Theatres.” The phrase “Witness the ending you’ve been waiting 28 years for” is what caused concern.

Okay, seriously, clear your schedule! I’m stocking up on treats because the finale we’ve all been anticipating for 28 years is finally here – “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” is out now, both in theaters and digitally. You absolutely have to see this!

Would Sony End 28 Years Later After Just Two Movies?

The movie wasn’t intended to be the last in the 28 Years Later series, and the ending of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple left many questions unanswered. The finale hinted at exciting possibilities, including an infected person regaining their memories and the return of Jim (Cillian Murphy), who hadn’t been seen since the original 28 Days Later.

People on X (formerly Twitter) quickly noticed the ad’s wording and started asking what it meant by “the ending.” Many pointed out that the story didn’t actually have an ending, as it left viewers on a cliffhanger. Others suggested the poor performance of the sequel might be the reason for the confusing ad.

One fan questioned the value of paying to see 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple now that a third film has been cancelled. Another responded that it’s still worth watching because it provides satisfying conclusions to two characters’ storylines.

Because it’s still good and has finales for two characters?

Another fan thought people were overanalyzing the show’s wording. When someone complained about the cliffhanger ending, another user replied, “People are excited Cillian Murphy appeared at the end, and everyone is making a bigger deal out of it than it is.”

Think about it simply. The phrase “Witness the ending you’ve been waiting for” and Cillian Murphy’s appearance at the end aren’t as complicated as people are making them out to be. Fans were anticipating his return, and that’s all there is to it.

Released on June 20, 2025, 28 Years Later performed well in theaters, earning $151.3 million with a $60 million budget, and critics loved it, giving it an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Director Danny Boyle returned for the sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, but it didn’t fare as well commercially, bringing in only $57.6 million on a $63 million budget. This led to speculation that the franchise might end. However, The Bone Temple actually received even better reviews than the first sequel, scoring a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite previous reports, Danny Boyle didn’t direct The Bone Temple, and that film featured Cillian Murphy reprising his role as Jim from 28 Days Later. Also, Sony hasn’t cancelled the third movie. In fact, last December, reports indicated that Sony was actively developing 28 Years Later with Murphy potentially returning, Boyle directing, and Alex Garland writing the screenplay.
