Dinosaurs Are Back! Jurassic World Breaks Box Office Records

The Jurassic Park series, featuring dinosaurs, remains vibrant and robust. Launched in 1993 with its initial release, it has now added a seventh film to its collection.

Following the initial two trilogies, Jurassic Park and Jurassic World, the latest addition continues with the latter’s title. This new chapter is directed by Gareth Edwards, who previously worked on Godzilla, and features stars like Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali. Although it received unfavorable reviews from critics initially, Jurassic World Rebirth has demonstrated that dinosaurs are anything but dull, with its second-best opening of the year, according to recent reports.

The movie titled “Jurassic World: Rebirth” premiered on July 2 and benefited from the upcoming five-day weekend. Yet, with only a few days having passed, this seventh installment in the dinosaur series has already garnered significant popularity, marking its Wednesday release as the highest-grossing day for any “Jurassic” film to date, though it didn’t set the franchise’s all-time opening record, placing fourth.

At first, analysts anticipated that the movie “Rebirth” would earn approximately $133.5 million in its five-day domestic debut. However, on Thursday, it exceeded expectations and the projected amount was revised to $137.5 million. Currently, the updated figure stands at $141.2 million, with earnings of $85.4 million over the three-day weekend (Friday to Sunday).

On Saturdays, the projection for Rebirth’s box office debut was revised upward, estimating a global opening of approximately $312.5 million. This new figure overshadows the initial forecast of $260 million. As a result, if these predictions hold true, Rebirth will secure the second-largest worldwide opening this year, trailing only A Minecraft Movie which amassed an impressive $953.1 million before wrapping up its run, and edging out Lilo & Stitch, which is poised to surpass A Minecraft Movie’s total as it has already accumulated $951.5 million globally.

In comparison to the opening of Jurassic World with its staggering $525 million earnings, Jurassic World: Rebirth won’t secure the highest debut within the Jurassic franchise. Despite this, it currently holds the second-highest foreign box office opening, surpassed only by Ne Zha 2 and ahead of Lilo & Stitch. Furthermore, Jurassic World: Rebirth garnered the best Fourth of July revenue for a top-ranking film post-COVID-19 and outperformed Despicable Me 4, which is set to be released in 2024.

In the review, the critic assigned a “rotten” grade of 51% to the dinosaur movie, yet audiences provided more favorable comments for an overall approval rating of 72%. This places it as the fourth-highest rated film in the Jurassic Park series.

The Jurassic Franchise Is Still Popular

After numerous Jurassic Park-style dinosaur films, audiences seem to be craving something innovative and fresh, so I decided to address that upfront by saying, ‘Look, it seems audiences aren’t as captivated by dinosaurs as they used to be,’” I explained. “I thought this candid opening would set the stage for an intriguing journey.

Despite a promising start with over $310 million in its opening weekend, the movie needs approximately $450 million to cover its production costs and other expenses. Given its budget of $180 million and the forthcoming release of James Gunn’s Superman next week, it has a limited time to generate profits. However, the positive reception suggests that dinosaurs continue to captivate audiences, increasing the film’s chances of profitability.

Jurassic World Rebirth is currently playing in theaters.
