Director Defends Controversial Ending of The Old Guard 2: ‘I Stand Behind It!’

*Warning – contains major spoilers for The Old Guard 2*

Fans eagerly awaiting the follow-up to Netflix’s 2020 movie “The Old Guard” since five long years have now received their wish, with the sequel debuting on Netflix. However, its arrival has stirred a mix of astonishment and frustration among some viewers.

In the finale, I find myself as an ardent spectator, witnessing Discord – the malevolent antagonist – plotting a sinister scheme. Having relinquished her immortality, she intends to compel Nile into seizing it from Andy’s team comrades and then usurp the power for herself.

She captures Nile, Copley, Joe, Tuah and Nicky, whose fates are left in the balance.

As a movie buff, I found myself cheering as Andy reconnected with Quynh, and the climactic moment of the film had us both dashing out the door in a race to rescue the team.

The conclusion has sparked quite a debate among viewers, with some finding it frustrating, while others argue that it lacks a satisfying resolution, offering neither a climax, midpoint, nor concluding point. Instead, it seems as though the story is only just starting at its end.

Nonetheless, the movie’s director, Victoria Mahoney, has since supported the film’s conclusion, expressing to ScreenRant that she remains “committed” to it.

Mahoney clarified that they hadn’t intentionally planned to keep things unresolved, instead, they tackled the film’s themes thoughtfully.

Mahoney expressed that those who initiated the project, they felt a mix of curiosity, amazement, and optimism. He was less focused on the journey itself, but more so on capturing the emotions of wonderment, hope, resilience, determination, and unity which the film embodies.

“As far as it being a cliffhanger, I don’t know how to approach things as a mechanism.”

Mahoney emphasized that her main goal was to depict “the current state or situation of each character at any particular point in time.

She declared, “That’s the entirety of what I’m pursuing,” she said. “Whether or not it ends in a suspenseful manner, or touches on elements that will delight some viewers while frustrating others, I have no control over those aspects. My focus is solely on creating this work with sincerity and integrity. I wholeheartedly stand by it.

Instead, fans can only cross their fingers and wait for a decision on another movie, hoping to discover how things turn out for Andy and his fellow team members.

Mahoney has shared with Entertainment Weekly that she is unaware of the future of the series, expressing her hope that the audience understands it, but clarifying that she won’t be present as the director.
