As a big *Mortal Kombat* fan, I was pretty bummed when the sequel got pushed back to May 2026! We were all expecting it this month, and while the trailer last month looked amazing, it meant a longer wait to see Karl Urban as Johnny Cage join the fight. Thankfully, director Simon McQuoid just explained the reason for the delay, and honestly, it’s a relief – it’s nothing to be concerned about at all!
At NYCC, director McQuoid explained the delay in the film’s release, stating the franchise’s popularity actually caused the issue. He believes moving the release date to early summer was necessary to ensure the film lived up to expectations, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The movie has steadily gained popularity with each viewing, and we’ve successfully made a huge summer hit. We should all be proud that Mortal Kombat II and future installments are planned for next year. It will be worth the wait, as the next film promises to be a major event.
Okay, so the delay right before release definitely frustrated fans who’ve been waiting *four years* for this sequel. But honestly, the studio still seems confident *Mortal Kombat II* will be a huge summer hit, and that gives me hope it’ll actually live up to the potential of the first film. I’m cautiously optimistic, to say the least!
‘Mortal Kombat II’ Will Throw Fans Into a Classic Tournament
Warner Bros. Pictures
The first film delivered the action and characters fans expected, but critics had mixed opinions. While audiences loved it – giving it an 85% approval rating – critics were less impressed, at 55%. This suggested the movie succeeded in its main goal: satisfying fans of the video game series, something earlier attempts hadn’t managed. This positive reception gave director McQuoid a clear direction for the next film. He stated:
After the first *Mortal Kombat* game, our main aim was to create a sequel that felt like a complete, expanded version of the original’s atmosphere. We’d only hinted at the depth of the *Mortal Kombat* universe and its story, and we wanted to really build on that and make everything much bigger and more detailed.
I was so excited to see Johnny Cage finally get the recognition he deserves with the fantastic Urban taking on the role! And it wasn’t just him – McQuoid really wanted to expand everything for the next movie, bringing in awesome new characters like the intimidating Baraka and just generally making it bigger and better.
We really wanted to push creative limits with this project. I focused on making the characters feel more deeply, with bigger emotional swings – really intense highs and lows. We aimed to explore all the different worlds and locations within Mortal Kombat, spending more time in each one and utilizing the wealth of established content we’ve built up over the years.
The success of the upcoming film seems promising, as a third *Mortal Kombat* movie is already in the works, with Jeremy Slater likely writing the script again. Warner Bros. is clearly focused on continuing the series, so fans shouldn’t have to wait another five years for the next installment.
