In an interview at San Diego Comic-Con this year, writer-director Zach Cregger revealed that “Barbarian” was deliberately designed to startle first-time viewers. However, such a trick wouldn’t have worked twice, and Cregger opted not to repeat it. Instead, the pacing will be more familiar for regular movie-goers while still maintaining the fear factor. The film “Weapons” is set to hit theaters on Friday, August 8th, so we won’t have to wait long to experience it.
In a nutshell, Cregger feels that “Weapons” has a more intricate structure than “Barbarian”. While both films are structurally distinctive, “Barbarian” can be confusing and frustrating for viewers when it changes direction. On the other hand, when “Weapons” transforms and renews itself, it maintains the momentum without ever detaching us from the story, hopefully.
Instead, it seems like he’s saying, “Here we go again. Time to tackle this. Let’s find a solution,” if you catch my drift. In essence, what he means is that he has made a significant change in his initial concept that better aligns with the intended experience.
Cregger’s debut as a full-length writer-director with the film “Barbarian” caused quite a stir in the horror genre and beyond, since he was primarily recognized for his work in comedy, appearing on the sketch show Whitest Kids U Know and several sitcoms. Following the 2022 premiere of “Barbarian”, Cregger encountered the significant task of meeting the high expectations set by its success and praise.
From various perspectives, the weapons prove equal to the task at hand. This movie takes place in a quaint Florida town, where an enigma unfolds: almost every child from one elementary school class simultaneously leave their homes in the dead of night without any apparent reason. As the community frantically searches for them and attempts to unravel the mystery, they unearth other unsettling truths along the way. The impressive ensemble cast includes Julia Garner, Benedict Wong, Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, among others.
At present, the film “Weapons” boasts a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 18 early reviews that have already been published. The movie will be released in U.S. cinemas on Friday, August 8th. On the other hand, the movie “Barbarian” is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
