As a die-hard Star Wars fan, I can’t help but be captivated by the iconic symbolism of lightsabers – as synonymous with this galactic saga as Darth Vader, the Millennium Falcon, or Luke Skywalker themselves. These glowing, energy-wielding swords, powered by mystical kyber crystals, are at once deadly, dangerous, and oh-so-cool.
In the early days of the Star Wars franchise, lightsabers were quite uniform: a sleek metal cylindrical hilt adorned with either a blue, green, or red blade. Yet, as the series expanded into new eras, so too did the designs of these iconic weapons. From Count Dooku’s curved hilt to Qimir’s innovative twin breakaway hilts in The Acolyte, no two Jedi wield a lightsaber that looks exactly the same.
Over centuries of Jedi history and countless variations of lightsabers, certain designs stand out more than others. Let’s take a look at some of the most unique lightsabers scattered across the galaxy.
The Darksaber
The name itself gives an immediate sense of awesomeness to the weapon, but the Darksaber’s prestige amplifies its cool factor. With a distinctive black blade that resembles a sword more than other weapons, the Darksaber was crafted by the initial and sole Mandalorian Jedi, Tarre Vizsla. To be deserving of holding the Darksaber, one must earn it in combat, fitting for the Mandalorians and their warrior-driven society. The individual who justly possesses the Darksaber holds the authority to unite the disparate clans and reign over Mandalore. In the current Star Wars universe, Bo-Katan Kryze is the legitimate owner of the Darksaber and leader of Mandalore, much like her deceased sister, Duchess Satine Kryze.
Darth Maul’s Lightsaber
Prior to Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, all Jedi wielded identical lightsabers, with differences limited to the color of the blade and occasionally the shape of the handle. However, this norm was shattered when Darth Maul, during his confrontation with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn, ignited a second blade from the other end of his hilt. This unexpected display of a double-ended lightsaber by Maul marked the first instance of such a weapon and remains a memorable and iconic moment in Star Wars lore.
The Inquisitors’ “Red Blades”
Although Darth Maul was the pioneer of dual-sided lightsabers, other dark side users adopted this design later on, with a unique twist. The Inquisitors, a group of Force-sensitive assassins serving under Vader’s command, are often referred to as “red blades” due to the crimson color of their sabers. Similar to Maul’s weapon, their lightsabers have two edges. However, their hilts are circular and can rotate the blade at an incredible speed, enabling them to fight relentlessly and outmaneuver opponents with astonishing speed. In situations where an Inquisitor believes they cannot prevail, they can use their oscillating saber like helicopter blades, allowing them to take flight and evade their enemies.
The Lightwhip
In contrast to traditional lightsabers that possess a rigid blade like a sword, there exists an uncommon type called a lightwhip, which behaves more like a whip due to its flexibility. This unique lightsaber variation was introduced in the live-action Star Wars series, The Acolyte, wielded by Jedi Master Vernestra Rowh. Lightwhips are adapted from standard lightsabers and carry an increased risk for both the user and their adversary, as improper handling can lead to self-inflicted injuries.
Ahsoka Tano’s Third Set of Lightsabers
In the Star Wars universe, the lightsabers crafted by Ahsoka Tano following the downfall of the Republic are exceptional and unlike any other. What sets Ahsoka apart from other Jedi is her fighting style – she wields two lightsabers, an uncommon sight indeed. Her distinctive set of weapons, forged after the Clone Wars, stands out because no other galaxy-wide Jedi possesses pure white blades. However, what truly makes Ahsoka’s white lightsabers extraordinary is their backstory. Upon defeating a Sith, she acquires a kyber crystal and utilizes the Force to purify it, turning the dark side’s corruption into innocence. This unique coloring of her sabers signifies that Ahsoka is not your typical Jedi.
Ezra Bridger’s Blaster Blade
In the initial part of Season 1 of “Star Wars Rebels”, Ezra is a padawan without a lightsaber because either finding kyber crystals or obtaining them has proven exceptionally challenging under Imperial control. Yet, Yoda bestows a kyber crystal upon him during a significant Jedi Temple encounter. Given the opportunity to create his initial lightsaber, Ezra astounds his team by presenting a multi-purpose gadget that looks like both a blaster and a saber. This innovative design allows Ezra to engage in combat using his lightsaber or switch to a blaster based on the circumstances, thereby making him an adaptable warrior.
Kylo Ren’s Three-Pronged Weapon
Kylo Ren/Ben Solo possesses a distinctive lightsaber unlike any other Jedi might envy. Unlike standard lightsabers, his has two additional horizontal blades at its base, resembling a medieval sword more than the usual design. These extra blades aid in stabilizing an unstable kyber crystal within and set him apart from the rest of the Skywalker lineage, who all used traditional lightsabers. Given that abandoning his legacy is a significant driving force for Ren, it’s fitting he’d carry a weapon that defies tradition. Kylo’s lightsaber is a modified version of an ancient design called a “crossguard lightsaber.
Lightsaber Rifle
In essence, the lightsaber rifle – undeniably one of the most awe-inspiring and intense forms of Star Wars weaponry – has never made it into live-action. Instead, it is found only in the 2017 comic series “Darth Vader” by Charles Soule. This powerful weapon, possibly an ancient artifact or too risky for regular use, was kept in the Jedi Archives. Yet, Jocasta Nu, a Jedi archivist, manages to wield it against Darth Vader in a unique way: she loads a standard lightsaber into the rifle’s barrel and discharges an energy blast.
Lightsaber Pike
During the Clone Wars, individuals safeguarding the Jedi Temples were armed with what can be described as long staffs or spears, adorned with a lightsaber blade at their ends – hence called “lightsaber staffs” or “lightsaber poles.” Some versions of these weapons featured double edges, while others sported shorter blades compared to standard ones. The extended length of the weapon enabled Jedi to maintain a safe distance from their adversaries, providing an upper hand in combat. Guardians of the temples usually wielded staffs with yellow blade colors instead of the customary blue and green used by the Jedi.
Mace Windu’s One-of-a-Kind Blade
Discussing the most stylish lightsabers wouldn’t be complete without acknowledging Mace Windu’s legendary purple one. No other Jedi, old or new, ever had the privilege of using such a distinctively flamboyant blade. This sets Mace Windu apart from countless heroes throughout history. In an interview on the Graham Norton Show, Samuel L. Jackson, who played Mace Windu in the prequel trilogy, revealed that he requested a purple lightsaber from George Lucas, stating, “I want a purple [lightsaber]. I’m like the second-most powerful Jedi in the galaxy after Yoda.
Kanan Jarrus’ Collapsible Lightsaber
In his youth as a Padawan, Kanan Jarrus narrowly evaded death when Order 66 was implemented, owing to his master’s heroic self-sacrifice. For years, he lived a life of stealth and deception as a petty thief, always concealing his true identity. The lightsaber that Kanan carries is symbolic of his reluctance to expose himself as a Jedi; it disassembles into two parts which he wears around his waist. When apart, the pieces are unassuming. However, when he swiftly reassembles them, he can catch his adversaries off guard, revealing a fully functional lightsaber.
