Warning to readers, you’re about to hear some spooky news! The popular series ‘Goosebumps’ has been called off at Disney+ after two thrilling seasons. According to Variety, this horror anthology – a TV-14 adaptation of R.L. Stine’s cherished books – won’t be making a comeback for a third round. However, unlike the recent cancellations of shows like ‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’, ‘Willow’, ‘American Born Chinese’, and ‘The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers’, there’s a possibility that ‘Goosebumps’ could resurface on another channel.
According to Variety’s reports, Sony Pictures Television, in collaboration with Scholastic Entertainment and Disney Branded Television, is rumored to be considering various broadcast platforms for the series Goosebumps, while also investigating potential new creative paths for this intellectual property.
Instead of creating its own exclusive streaming service like Disney+ or Hulu, Sony adopts a strategy more akin to an arms dealer in content distribution, making their productions available across various streaming platforms such as HBO, Peacock, Prime Video, Apple TV+, Paramount+, MGM+, Netflix, and potentially even a new Goosebumps season on one of these platforms.
Sony Pictures currently holds a four-year film licensing agreement with Netflix, set to last until 2026. This partnership has seen popular shows like “Cobra Kai” and “The Night Agent,” produced by Sony TV, air on Netflix. Additionally, episodes from the original “Goosebumps” series can be found on the streaming service’s platform.
Inspired by the globally popular book series “Goosebumps,” the first season featured Ana Yi Puig, Miles McKenna, Rachael Harris, Will Price, Zack Morris, and Justin Long. The television show came back for its second season in January as “Goosebumps: The Vanishing,” introducing a new cast that included Ana Ortiz, Jayden Bartels, Sam McCarthy, Elijah M. Cooper, Francesca Noel, Galilea La Salvia, Stony Blyden, and David Schwimmer.
Rob Letterman, the executive producer, mentioned earlier that it took some time for them to fully embrace the anthology concept for the Goosebumps reboot. He explained that since Goosebumps is inherently an anthology series, each book stands alone and doesn’t necessarily have a neat, tidy ending. Instead, they often conclude with an unexpected twist.
It seemed fitting within the universe of ‘Goosebumps’, as it offered us an opportunity to delve into a fresh batch of books. This allowed us to venture into various genres and experience fear again. He further mentioned that if a third season were to materialize, it would introduce a new set of teenagers. Jokingly, he added that this change was necessary to keep the characters from growing too accustomed to horror, becoming desensitized to each new monster. So, for all these reasons, an anthology format felt like the most natural choice.
The television series ‘Goosebumps,’ created by Nicholas Stoller and Rob Letterman, has amassed a total of 118 million hours viewed across the US and 16 international territories over its initial two seasons. Currently, all 18 episodes of this series can be streamed on Disney+.
