Disney is well-known for bringing back popular stories and characters. They had a lot of success in the 2010s by turning their classic animated shows into live-action versions, which helped their studio compete with brands like Marvel and Star Wars – both of which they continue to revisit. Disney+ has become a hub for these revivals, with reboots of shows like Percy Jackson, X-Men, and The Mighty Ducks. Now, Disney has given fans a first look at their latest revival – a project that’s been in the works for many years.
In 2004, Disney bought The Muppets, which seemed like a great fit for their collection of beloved characters, even though the Muppets are known for being unconventional. Disney’s had some success with Muppet projects over the years, but recently announced a major revival of the original The Muppet Show after over 40 years. Now, we have a premiere date, ending a decades-long gap in new episodes.
The Muppet Show Returns for First New Episode in 45 Years
Disney is reviving The Muppet Show with a new special event, the first episode in over 40 years since the show ended in 1981. Seth Rogen’s production company will help bring back the classic format of the Muppets interacting with a celebrity guest star – this time, Sabrina Carpenter. A recent teaser revealed the premiere date: February 4th, 2026, on both ABC and Disney+.
The upcoming special episode is being tested as a possible starting point for a whole new season of the show. With Christina Carpenter on board, the series is likely to be a hit, given her widespread popularity. It will also be interesting to see how her personality interacts with the existing characters. Earlier this year, Carpenter invited Miss Piggy to one of her concerts in Los Angeles, and that moment might be included in the special.
Everyone remembers that The Muppet Show wasn’t just about the Muppets themselves – it was also famous for how they played off of each episode’s celebrity guests. Big names like Rita Moreno, Elton John, Steve Martin, and Julie Andrews all appeared on the show. Now, with Carpenter’s appearance, she’s likely paving the way for other modern stars to do the same. If this event goes well, it could lead to a full revival of The Muppet Show.
Disney’s ownership of The Muppets has been a bit of a rollercoaster. While the 2011 Muppet movie was a big success, earning over $160 million worldwide and an Oscar for its original song, the sequel didn’t perform as well. This led to the Muppets disappearing from the big screen for eleven years. Attempts to revive the franchise on television also haven’t been successful, with three different shows each lasting only one season. Now, a new revival of The Muppet Show is coming in February, and it remains to be seen if it will fare better.
