Disney’s live-action remakes of classic animated films are consistently successful in theaters, and the recent version of Lilo & Stitch has now grossed over $1 billion worldwide. Although not every remake has been a huge hit, several—like the live-action Beauty and the Beast—have reached that impressive milestone. Now, Disney is creating a spin-off movie based on Beauty and the Beast, but one of the original cast members won’t be involved.
According to a new report in Variety, Disney is working on a live-action series based on Beauty and the Beast, centering around the villain Gaston. While fans of the original film – and Luke Evans’ performance as Gaston – will be excited, Evans is not expected to return for this new project.
Disney Will Hunt For A New Gaston (And A New Take On The Character)

I’m hearing the studio isn’t going to continue the story from the last live-action Beauty and the Beast movie. Instead, they’re planning a completely new take on Gaston with a different actor! It sounds like it might be a standalone story, but honestly, it’s hard to say for sure. I’m really curious to see what they do with the character, though, because Gaston is pretty consistent across all the versions we’ve seen.
It’s hard to imagine Gaston becoming less self-centered, but it would be interesting to see a version that’s genuinely charming instead of just pretending to be. He always thought he was charming, but Belle showed that it was mostly an act. Perhaps it’s time to explore the personality he believes he has, rather than the one others see. Only time will tell if that happens.
While the story details are still under wraps, David Callaham, known for his work on films like Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is writing the screenplay. Currently, there’s no director for the movie and casting for the role of Gaston hasn’t begun.
I’m a little shocked it’s taken Disney this long to revisit Beauty and the Beast! The live-action movie from 2017 was a huge hit, and it came out pretty early in their run of live-action remakes. It made over $1.2 billion worldwide – it’s the second highest-grossing one they’ve done, only behind The Lion King. You’d think they’d have jumped back to it sooner given how well it did!
The movie has received positive reviews, earning a 71% rating from critics and an 80% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Following its success, Disney has remade other beloved animated films for theaters, including Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, Snow White, and Lilo & Stitch. They have even more in the works, with Tangled, Moana, and a sequel to Lilo & Stitch currently being developed, among others.
Beauty and the Beast (live-action) is available to stream on Disney+.
