Lucasfilm unveiled a teaser for The Mandalorian and Grogu during Super Bowl 2026, but the reveal didn’t quite land as expected. While fans anticipated new footage, the actual ad turned out to be a humorous take on classic commercials, specifically mimicking the iconic Budweiser Clydesdale spots. The 30-second clip, directed by Jon Favreau, shows Din Djarin and Grogu traveling across a snowy landscape pulled by a group of tauntauns.
The initial reaction to the The Mandalorian & Grogu teaser was largely confusion. Considering it’s the first Star Wars film announced since 2019, the marketing strategy felt surprisingly unconventional. However, Lucasfilm’s marketing lead, Ryan Stankevich, explained to Variety that the intent was to create a trailer that was “instantly iconic, cinematic, and truly Star Wars,” despite the seemingly odd approach. They hoped to make a big impact, as these promotional spots are very expensive.
Our team developed a fresh idea for the ad that paid homage to memorable past Super Bowl commercials. It highlighted the heartwarming, funny, and relatable connection between the two characters, and it felt like the ideal way to build excitement for their movie release this summer.
I also learned they talked about how much the trailer featured the main characters from the movie. Jackson George, a big shot at Disney’s marketing team, explained that was a key part of their thinking.
Grogu isn’t just a character—he’s become a huge part of pop culture. Traveling with the Mandalorian, he adds a sense of fun, humor, and heartwarming connection that goes beyond any single scene. This advertisement celebrates our strong connection to these characters and reminds us of the excitement, heart, and grand scale that make Star Wars so special, offering a glimpse of what audiences can expect when these two favorites appear on the big screen.
Will The Super Bowl Spot Help The Mandalorian & Grogu?
The Super Bowl reaches over 100 million people, making it a prime opportunity to introduce a movie to a huge audience – many of whom may not have heard of it before seeing a trailer or commercial during the game. While the Super Bowl will definitely increase awareness of The Mandalorian & Grogu, it remains to be seen if it’s sparked genuine excitement for the film, particularly as a movie meant to be seen in theaters.
Honestly, the new trailer itself wasn’t bad, but the whole situation around it feels really strange. The first trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu didn’t exactly wow anyone, and it didn’t give me any reason to believe this isn’t just Season 4 of The Mandalorian, or that it’s worth the money to see it in a cinema – and that’s a big deal these days. With the initial marketing falling flat, it felt like Lucasfilm needed to knock it out of the park with the Super Bowl spot to change the narrative, but I don’t think it really did.
I enjoy The Mandalorian and even collect “Baby Yoda” items, but I’m finding it hard to get excited about this movie. Season 3 wasn’t as good as the first two seasons, and honestly, the plot is confusing right now.
It’s not that early information will ruin the experience, but currently, it feels like there isn’t much to spoil, and that’s concerning. If I’m feeling this way, it’ll likely be even more confusing for regular moviegoers who are just finding out about the new Star Wars film, don’t know the story, and have little reason to be excited about seeing it.

Lucasfilm is really counting on kids to save this project. While adults might voice their complaints online, Grogu has already shown that younger Star Wars fans love the character. If the movie can capture their attention and there’s strong demand from that age group to see Mando and Grogu on the big screen, it still has a chance to succeed.
It’s still rare to find genuinely good family movies, even though they often do well in theaters. The Mandalorian and Grogu faces little competition in this area. Along with the holiday weekend, that might be the key to its success, unless the studio steps up its marketing efforts.
The Mandalorian and Grogu releases in theaters on May 22nd, 2026.
Okay, I just saw the Super Bowl trailer and I’m dying to hear what everyone else thought! Seriously, let me know your reactions – I’m heading over to the ComicBook Forum right now to chat about it with other fans, and you should too!
