Disney Quietly Removes Iconic Hollywood Studios Archway After 36 Years

Well, folks, if you’re planning a trip to Disney’s Hollywood Studios and remember walking through that iconic archway into what used to be the Animation Courtyard, prepare for a bit of a shock. It’s gone. Disney quietly removed it overnight between October 17th and 18th, 2025. That arch had been there since the park opened back in 1989 – a full 36 years of welcoming guests. It’s definitely the end of an era and a little piece of Disney history disappearing.

He then shared more photos, this time showing the courtyard from above as it was being dismantled.

Why an Archway?

The archway first showcased the name Disney–MGM Studios. It was designed to look like the entrances to traditional Hollywood studios in California, creating a sense of moving from a typical theme park into a genuine, working studio. And it wasn’t just for show—when the park opened, it actually operated as a production center for TV shows and animated films.

The archway marked the entrance to the story of Disney animation. Walking through it was like going back to the glamorous days of old Hollywood, where movies were made with a special kind of wonder.

How the Archway Changed Over the Years

When the park first opened in 1989, the arch displayed a striking sign reading “Disney–MGM Studios” in an elegant Art Deco style, reminiscent of buildings from 1930s and 40s Los Angeles. Its design was intentionally uneven, taking inspiration from famous landmarks like the Pan-Pacific Auditorium.

The arch was special—even for Disney—because of a cleverly concealed detail. While guests often look for hidden Mickey Mouse shapes, this arch famously included a hidden silhouette of Donald Duck, which was an unusual and delightful surprise.

In 2008, Disney stopped working with MGM, and the park was rebranded as Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The entrance sign was changed to match the new name, with Mickey Mouse playfully appearing in one of the letters. Later, the logo was made even simpler, using basic block letters – a hint of the changes still to come for the park.

Disney’s Most Confusing Park Theme

Taking down the arch represents a larger issue – Disney’s Hollywood Studios has consistently faced challenges in defining its core theme.

From the beginning, the park struggled to define itself. It wasn’t clear if it should focus on being a real movie studio, a celebration of old Hollywood films, a look at how movies are made, or a place to highlight Disney’s newest popular franchises. Over the years, original attractions like The Great Movie Ride, the Backlot Tour, and The Magic of Disney Animation were either removed or changed, and areas based on popular franchises like Star Wars and Toy Story became the main focus.

Honestly, the park changed so much over the years that it started to lose what made it special. That old archway? It was one of the very few things left that reminded me of all the movies filmed there – it felt like a little piece of movie history, and now it’s gone. It’s a shame they let it fade away.

What Comes Next?

The archway is no longer there, and Animation Courtyard is currently blocked off by construction walls. The building that used to house Star Wars Launch Bay is being renovated and will return to its roots as an animation attraction called “The Magic of Disney Animation.” This new area will feature “Drawn to Wonderland,” a play area designed for kids. Disney plans to redesign the courtyard to resemble the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California.

Many dedicated fans aren’t seeing this as an exciting fresh start, but rather a simple, low-cost makeover. So far, the announced changes mostly involve cosmetic updates like new paint and signs, along with a redesigned playground. Plus, the removal of the iconic archway has taken away one of the park’s most famous and picturesque landmarks.

It’s still unclear if Disney’s changes will actually be a significant improvement, or just another round of corporate reorganization presented as forward movement.
