Over the years, Netflix has canceled many shows, but the fate of its Marvel’s Defenders series was especially disappointing for fans. The storyline unfolded across six shows, each getting canceled one after another, with Jessica Jones being the last in 2019. Now, seven years later, the Defenders are returning in a new series, Daredevil: Born Again, but this time on Disney+.
For a while now, Marvel Studios has been laying the groundwork for a bigger return of its street-level heroes, first with Wilson Fisk in Hawkeye and Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The second season of Daredevil: Born Again marks an even more significant comeback, bringing Krysten Ritter back as Jessica Jones and officially adding a second member of The Defenders to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Interestingly, the series is also shifting the timeline, aiming for a period when the movies and shows weren’t as interconnected – a time many fans consider to have been more successful. After a few years, it looks like Marvel Television is finally heading in the right direction.
The Defenders Saga Was a Golden Age for Marvel Television
For those who’ve been following the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a while, the first TV shows weren’t the ones produced by Marvel Studios for Disney+. Back in 2013, Marvel started with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., commissioning shows to expand the movie universe. Of the series that followed, the Netflix shows known as the Defenders Saga were particularly well-received and popular with audiences.
The Defenders series on Disney+ distinguished itself from other Marvel content by embracing a darker, more realistic tone. Unlike the films and TV shows on traditional networks, these series weren’t heavily tied to the main Marvel Cinematic Universe, with only occasional references to the Avengers. Though some viewers initially wished for more connections to the wider MCU, the relative independence of the Defenders shows might actually be a good thing now.
When Marvel Studios took over television production and started making shows for Disney+, fans were initially thrilled to get more connected series. However, the shows soon felt too similar, and many viewers found it exhausting to watch everything just to follow the overall story.
Honestly, a lot of us were excited about where things were headed at first, but it felt like everyone else just got tired of it all. People started saying they missed the good old days of the original Defenders series, and it’s amazing – it really feels like we’re back there now. It’s like getting a second chance at something we all loved.
Marvel Studios Is Finally Finding Its Footing on TV Thanks to The Defenders
Disney+ is revitalizing the Defenders franchise after a bit of a wait. Daredevil has already returned with his own series after guest appearances in other Marvel shows, and Jessica Jones is coming back soon. There’s a good chance we’ll see other Defenders characters reappear as well. It looks like Marvel Studios is now focusing on the successful formulas that worked for them in the past.
For years, Marvel fans watching shows on Disney+ have felt like they were just watching long movies, as most series only lasted one season with six episodes. However, Daredevil: Born Again is starting to shift that trend, becoming only the second live-action Marvel show to get renewed for another season and the fourth to have more than six episodes. Another upcoming series will also follow suit, offering more episodes and focusing less on connections to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe. Hopefully, this signals a positive change for Marvel’s TV shows moving forward.
The second season of Born Again seems to be focusing on its own storylines rather than heavily connecting to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, judging by the premiere episode. While “The Northern Star” mentions someone who also supports the New Avengers, there’s no sign that team will appear in the Daredevil series. Matt Murdock and his team will continue to deal with smaller, local problems, leaving the big, world-ending crises to other heroes.
Unlike the original Defenders series, the Netflix heroes have already appeared in Marvel movies. Now, it’s not about whether they’ll join the main Marvel Cinematic Universe, but when. This opens the door for the movies and TV shows to connect like they did with the Defenders Saga, and could start a new exciting era for Marvel on screen.
New episodes of Daredevil: Born Again premiere at 6 PM on Tuesdays on Disney+.
