Disney Plus’s Star Wars television series have shown a mix of hits and misses, with the consistency extending to whether they are renewed for multiple seasons. The journey began positively, as The Mandalorian demonstrated the potential for live-action Star Wars series and rose to become one of the most significant achievements of the Disney era, boasting three seasons and a movie in the pipeline. Andor also stands out, with two seasons that elevated the franchise by delivering a critically acclaimed prestige drama. Ahsoka is set to return for a second season, which is slated to air in 2026.
On one extreme, we find some disappointing outcomes. For instance, The Book of Boba Fett wrapped up its single season and seems unlikely to make a comeback. Similarly, The Acolyte left hints for a second installment, but was unfortunately canceled prematurely. Meanwhile, Skeleton Crew, a thrilling adventure, failed to gain widespread recognition. However, somewhere between these extremes lies the case of Obi-Wan Kenobi, a series that stirred controversy but continues to generate discussion about potential future installments. Ewan McGregor himself has expressed interest in a second season for the character, yet he believes it will not be as a solo series anymore. Instead, we may expect Obi-Wan’s return in some other capacity or format.
Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 Would Be A Mistake
Despite many requests for a second season of Obi-Wan Kenobi, it seems more suitable that we don’t see one. The first season offered some touching moments with Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker’s connection, as well as an endearing tale featuring Princess Leia. However, the Inquisitors didn’t live up to their potential from Star Wars Rebels, the plot was often confusing and overly stretched, and it seemed every character was protected by a layer of plot armor.
The issue with Season 2, however, isn’t about its quality – it’s more of a question about its purpose. While Season 1 took a significant risk by introducing an encounter between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader that was not hinted at in “A New Hope,” it managed to pull off that gamble. However, Season 2 would face similar challenges – and limitations – due to these constraints. It seems there’s only so much room for exploration; bringing back Vader again might be problematic, Maul is seemingly out of bounds because of “Rebels,” and then there’s the question of what plot would justify Kenobi leaving Tatooine. The series doesn’t seem to have a compelling story waiting to unfold, and it’s unclear why we should delve into the sandy landscapes of Tatooine to find one.
As a devoted fan, I must admit that I’ve been pondering the state of Star Wars. It’s no secret that it’s grappling with an issue – it needs to forge ahead. To ensure a more radiant tomorrow, it cannot cling too tightly to its yesteryears, calling back beloved figures like Obi-Wan, Darth Vader, and Luke Skywalker, no matter how much Disney seems eager to challenge that notion. Instead, it should delve into uncharted territories – be it the post-Rise of Skywalker timeline depicted in Star Wars: Starfighter, or the era of Dawn of the Jedi set 25,000 years ago. The same advice applies to characters, ideas, and locales (give it a few years before even considering a return trip to Tatooine!).
Obi-Wan has certainly had his share of notable moments, earning him a place among Star Wars’ most iconic characters. Ewan McGregor has always delivered a top-notch performance in this role. While there might be an opportunity for a lesser, more supporting part for him down the line, it appears that Season 2 of Obi-Wan Kenobi is not going to happen.
All episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi are streaming on Disney+.
