As a critic, I’ve been keeping a close eye on Marvel’s plans, and with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse currently popular on Disney+, it’s giving us a good taste of what’s to come. For years, Marvel’s been building towards a massive, multiverse-spanning event, and it looks like Avengers: Doomsday in 2026 will finally deliver. Think of it as the first part of a two-act finale, leading into the even bigger Avengers: Secret Wars a year after that.
Sony Animation already explored the Marvel multiverse with the 2023 film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which skillfully wove a cohesive story across numerous alternate realities. Even three years after its release, the movie is currently performing well on Disney+, ranking as the sixth most-watched film this week (according to FlixPatrol).
Across The Spider-Verse Embraced The Scope Of Marvel’s Multiverse
While Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse introduced the idea of a multiverse in 2018, the story mostly took place in a single world. The sequel, however, really explores this concept when Miles discovers “canon events” – key moments that seem destined to happen, no matter how different realities become.
The idea of alternate universes is key to the film, and Miles encounters many different versions of Spider-Man, each adding unique depth to the story. The film builds on the rich history of Spider-Verse comics, demonstrating the exciting possibilities of exploring a true multiverse.
The Bar Is High For Doomsday & Secret Wars After Sony’s Spider-Verse
The massive story arc in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, known as the Infinity Saga, concluded with the 2019 release of Avengers: Endgame. Meanwhile, Sony’s Into the Spider-Verse arrived in 2018. Since then, Marvel has tried to build a new, equally exciting Multiverse Saga, but it’s been difficult to generate the same level of excitement.
The popular Spider-Verse movies continued to impress, with the 2023 sequel building on the success of the first film. Despite the five-year wait, fans remained excited, unlike the recent decline in enthusiasm seen with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Even with recent challenges, Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars could revitalize the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The return of the Russo Brothers as directors, combined with the films being direct continuations of Avengers: Endgame, might draw audiences back in for a new chapter of the MCU, and to see what’s left of the universe after a massive, Multiverse-ending battle.
Will Avengers: Secret Wars Tie Into The Spider-Verse Movies?
Although storylines like Doomsday and Secret Wars began within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the idea of the multiverse has enabled the inclusion of characters and stories from other Marvel properties. This has brought together elements from the X-Men films (originally from Fox), the Blade trilogy, and many other sources, creating a more unified Marvel cinematic universe than ever before.
Considering all of this, Marvel Studios definitely has the chance to incorporate something like the Spider-Verse into their projects, even if it’s just a quick, easy-to-miss appearance as characters move between different universes. No matter what they do, it’s great to see so much interest in the multiverse before the Avengers: Doomsday movie, especially with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse becoming so popular on Disney+.
