Disney Scores Inuyasha’s Spiritual Successor

Inuyasha is a hugely popular anime series, and it’s easy to see why. It was one of the first shows to popularize the ‘isekai’ genre, telling the story of a modern girl transported back in time. Now, with the return of the main character in the sequel series Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon, the world of Inuyasha continues to thrive. Thankfully, the creator, Rumiko Takahashi, is still making new works, and Disney is now taking advantage of her latest success.

Starting April 4th, the anime version of Rumiko Takahashi’s newest story, Mao, will be available on Hulu in the US and Disney+ internationally. The animation is being handled by Sunrise, the studio behind popular series like Inuyasha and Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon. This new anime is planned to have twenty-six episodes, offering fans a substantial story that offers a fresh take on Takahashi’s previous work. Similar to Inuyasha, Mao follows a young girl who finds herself in a different world, where she meets the main character and faces various supernatural dangers.

The Coming of Mao

If you’re not familiar with Mao, here’s a description of the new anime: It follows Mao, a powerful mystic living in early 1900s Japan. He’s been alive for 900 years because of a curse. His life gets even more complicated when he meets Nanoka Kiba, a middle school student who appears to be from the future. Nanoka also has a difficult past, having lost her parents in a tragic accident when she was young.

The anime follows Nanoka, who finds herself transported to a supernatural world filled with spirits called ayakashi when she revisits an old shopping arcade. There, she meets a strange boy named Mao, who makes her question everything she thought she knew about herself. Together, these two travelers from different eras must confront a dark force that threatens both their lives. This is the long-awaited anime adaptation of Rumiko Takahashi’s work, and it promises a mysterious world filled with curses and adventure!

Yuki Kaji will voice Mao, with Natsumi Kawaida as Nanoka Kiba, Hiro Shimono as Hyakka, Toshiyuki Toyonaga as Kamon, Momoka Terasawa as Otoya, Kazuyuki Okitsu as Shiranui, Motoko Kumai as Funa Uozumi, Yoko Hikasa as Tenko, Risa Shimizu as Sana, Reina Ueda as Yurako, and Takashi Matsuyama as Byoki. It remains to be seen if Takahashi’s newest work will be as successful as their previous popular titles.
