Disney Sequel Confirmed as a Streaming Hit Days After Live-Action Remake Announced

This summer, Stitch is experiencing tremendous success! The live-action reboot of Lilo & Stitch is nearly reaching a billion dollars at international box offices, making it the highest-grossing film of the year so far, outperforming Warner Brothers’ A Minecraft Movie. Last week, in honor of “626” day (a reference to Stitch’s government name “Experiment 626”), Disney declared plans for a live-action sequel following the first film’s remarkable success. The little alien who yearned for a family is currently booming as a commercial venture, and fans are rekindling their love for the franchise in a significant way.

It appears that the announcement of a new live-action version of Lilo & Stitch has caused Disney+’s streaming rankings to shift significantly. According to FlixPatrol, the follow-up movie, Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch, has moved up to become the fourth most-watched film worldwide on the platform. Interestingly, the original animated Lilo & Stitch has also seen an increase in viewership due to the success of its live-action adaptation, currently ranking as the eighth most-watched movie on Disney+.

Introduced in 2005, three years after the initial animated movie, “Stitch Has a Glitch” picks up the story of our duo as they attempt to rectify a problem with Stitch’s molecular makeup that surfaced during his apprehension in the previous film. This malfunction causes Stitch to revert back to his original programming, threatening Earth and those he cares about. Lilo finds herself torn between helping her friend and preparing for an upcoming hula competition that holds personal significance for her. If Dr. Jumba can’t fix Stitch’s molecular issue, he will perish. Although the character of Lilo was played by a young Dakota Fanning in this sequel, several original cast members returned to voice their characters including Chris Sanders as Stitch, Tia Carrere as Lilo’s elder sister Nani, and David Ogden Stiers as Dr. Jumba. Unlike its predecessor, “Stitch Has a Glitch” did not have a theatrical release but was instead made available on home video twenty years ago.

Will The Live-Action Lilo & Stitch 2 Be Based Off the Animated One?

Currently, we’re in a state of uncertainty as Disney has only revealed that a sequel to Lilo & Stitch is being developed, with no disclosed details about the plot, creative team, or release date. Given the impressive success of the first live-action film, it’s logical to assume that Disney will probably bring back director Dean Fleischer Camp for this sequel. Additionally, it seems plausible that Maia Kealoha and Chris Sanders, who played Lilo and provided the voice of Stitch in the original film, will return to their roles.

Due to the growing popularity of “Lilo & Stitch 2” on streaming platforms, there’s a possibility that Disney might consider transforming its story (or certain aspects of it) into a live-action movie. However, the sequel, while heartfelt and emotionally impactful for a children’s direct-to-video production, has a relatively limited scope. To ensure another successful summer blockbuster with the live-action sequel to the original film, Disney might choose to extend the protagonists’ next adventure beyond Hawaii. If the animated “Lilo & Stitch” sequel maintains its high viewership on Disney+, the studio may feel compelled to cater to the audience’s apparent demand for more.
