A fresh take on the classic sci-fi character “John Carter of Mars” is currently in progress, 13 years after Disney’s film version failed to perform well at cinemas. Originating from short stories and novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1912, John Carter is a beloved pulp sci-fi hero who has also been featured in comic books. As per The Wrap’s report, the author’s estate is developing an animated series based on Burroughs’ work, with Michael Kogge at the helm of the project. The destination for this series remains undisclosed for now, but further information may be revealed later this week. Kogge will offer fans a preview of the series during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday.
John Carter, originally from Virginia and a former captain in the Confederate army during the American Civil War, later pursued wealth as a gold prospector in the southwestern territories. However, his dealings with Native American tribes led to conflicts. In the original tale, it appeared he perished while hiding in a cave, but an enigmatic transfer occurred, transporting him to Mars where he miraculously regained his physical form.
On Mars, known as Barsoom by its inhabitants, Carter resides among fellow humans. Additionally, the planet houses various humanoid species and both terrifying alien beasts and legendary creatures. Having been raised on Earth, Carter possesses greater physical strength and agility compared to the natives of Barsoom, enabling him to assist them in defeating monsters and overcoming obstacles.
The narrative has significantly influenced science fiction and genre literature of the past century. For instance, George Lucas acknowledged it as a significant influence in shaping the plot for Star Wars, and it’s frequently mentioned alongside other pulp favorites such as Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers. Nevertheless, only a few attempts have been made to translate Carter’s tales onto the screen, with Disney’s 2012 film John Carter being the most ambitious endeavor. Unfortunately, this movie was met with both critical and commercial disappointment.
In a recent update, Kogge’s upcoming project is set to become an animated television show, and he’s suggested it may resemble anime, likening it to popular Netflix originals like “Castlevania”, “Blood of Zeus”, and “Twilight of the Gods”. Not long ago, Kogge transformed Burroughs’ tales into an audio drama series, which is currently being recorded with a complete cast. As of now, there’s no specific release date for this audio series, but it’s expected to premiere prior to the animated one.
