After the massive success of Game of Thrones for HBO in the 2010s, every studio and streaming service wanted to create a similar hit. Netflix tried with The Last Kingdom, and Amazon Prime Video explored fantasy with both The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and The Wheel of Time. While many have attempted to replicate its success, none have quite matched it. Meanwhile, HBO continued to produce Game of Thrones spin-offs to stay dominant in the high-budget drama space, and they’re adding a Harry Potter series soon as well.
Disney hasn’t traditionally tried to create a show like the mature and intense Game of Thrones. However, their series Shogun actually stands as a strong competitor. From the start, this historical drama on FX – which Disney owns – proved it could go head-to-head with HBO’s fantasy hit. While Shogun doesn’t feature dragons, it quickly gained recognition for its lavish costumes, beautiful sets, complex storylines, compelling characters, and epic battle sequences – all comparable to Game of Thrones. Originally presented as a single-season limited series, Shogun is returning for more, and we’re now learning the details.
Shogun Season 2 Confirms New Details, Including a Time Jump
FX has announced more information about Season 2 of Shogun, including new actors and plot hints, as part of a Disney+ preview event. Joining the cast are Asami Kizukawa, Masataka Kubota, Sho Kaneta, Takaaki Enoki, and Jun Kunimura. They will appear alongside returning stars Hiroyuki Sanada, who won an Emmy for his role as Toranaga, and Cosmo Jarvis as Blackthorne. Fumi Nikaidô, Shinnosuke Abe, Hiroto Kanai, Yoriko Dôguchi, Tommy Bastow, Yuko Miyamoto, Eita Okuno, and Yuka Kouri will also be back for the new season.
FX has revealed some initial details about the next season of Shōgun. Set ten years after the events of season one, it will continue the story of Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) and English pilot John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), whose lives are deeply connected. Filming for the new episodes is planned to begin in Vancouver this January.
Many viewers remember that the first season of Shogun closely followed James Clavell’s popular novel. The upcoming season will be different, taking inspiration from real historical events that originally sparked the story. The significant time jump of ten years between episodes, while a long wait for audiences, will actually benefit the series.
The new show will take some time to create. Co-creator Justin Marks explained to Variety that they don’t want a long gap between seasons like some shows have—where you start season two and it feels like only a short time has passed in the show’s timeline, even if years have passed in real life. Instead, they’re using a time jump to reintroduce the characters and show how their lives have evolved over the last decade, allowing viewers to rediscover them.
The first season of Shogun was a massive success, winning a record-breaking 18 Emmy Awards. If that wasn’t enough to show it could rival shows like Game of Thrones, the upcoming second season is expected to solidify its place among the best.
