2025 was an unexpected year for moviegoers. The biggest hits in the US weren’t the films anyone predicted, as both A Minecraft Movie and Lilo & Stitch earned over $423 million – with their totals being remarkably close. Successful sequels like Universal’s Jurassic World Rebirth and Wicked: For Good also performed strongly, but Warner Bros. seemed to have the most success overall, with hits including Superman, Sinners, Weapons, The Conjuring: Last Rites, and Final Destination. In contrast, Marvel had a disappointing year, with three films falling short of expectations.
Despite some recent challenges with Marvel movies, Disney has still had a strong year, with three of its films ranking among the highest earners. Surprisingly, Disney’s biggest hit of 2025 isn’t a Marvel film, a live-action remake, or a new Avatar movie—it’s Zootopia 2. The sequel has already earned over $1.46 billion worldwide, breaking Disney records and proving the franchise is a major success, potentially surpassing even their most established properties.
Zootopia 2 Becomes Disney Animation’s Biggest Film Ever

As a huge movie fan, I’ve been following the numbers for Zootopia 2, and wow! It’s officially crossed $1.46 billion worldwide, making it the second highest-grossing film of 2025 so far – only behind Ne Zha 2‘s incredible $2 billion. It even beat out the live-action Lilo & Stitch remake, which made over $1.038 billion (and Avatar: Fire and Ash is still doing well, too!). But here’s the really exciting part: Zootopia 2 is now the highest-grossing movie ever from Walt Disney Animation Studios, surpassing Frozen II‘s previous record of $1.45 billion. That’s a pretty amazing achievement!
Okay, so Zootopia 2 is currently trailing just slightly behind the original at the domestic box office – we’re talking $333 million versus $341 million. But honestly, that’s not the whole story. This sequel is really holding strong and will likely continue to draw audiences for weeks. What’s truly impressive, though, is its international performance. The first Zootopia earned $677 million overseas, but Zootopia 2 is already at $1.13 billion! That kind of global appeal makes it crystal clear: Disney has a major, long-term franchise on its hands.
It had been nine years since the first Zootopia movie, with only the Zootopia+ TV series released in the meantime. Considering how well the film is doing now, Disney will almost certainly start working on more Zootopia projects very soon. While gaps between sequels usually build excitement, this level of success – something Disney hasn’t seen much of lately – makes further Zootopia movies a near certainty. The question isn’t if there will be more, but when they’ll be released.
