In 2019, Disney had an incredibly successful year at the box office, with seven of its movies earning over $1 billion worldwide. Films from Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and Disney’s own animation studios and live-action remakes all proved popular with audiences. However, recent releases haven’t performed as well. The studio was counting on its new film, *Tron: Ares*, to be a hit, but it appears it will be another underperforming movie.
According to *Deadline*, *Tron: Ares* earned about $33.5 million in the U.S. and Canada during its opening weekend, with a worldwide total of $60.5 million. These numbers are lower than originally expected; earlier projections estimated a $44 million domestic opening. While that would have matched the opening weekend of *Tron: Legacy*, *Ares* ultimately performed below its predecessor at the box office.
Tron: Ares Is Disney’s Latest Box Office Disappointment in 2025
Disney has seen some box office successes this year. The live-action remake of *Lilo & Stitch* has been the biggest Hollywood hit of 2025, earning over $1.037 billion in theaters—a new record. And while *The Fantastic Four: First Steps* didn’t perform as well after its opening weekend, it still brought in $521.7 million globally, making it the only Marvel film this year to reach that level of revenue. It wasn’t quite the blockbuster Disney hoped for, but it wasn’t a failure either. However, other Disney releases haven’t fared as well.
2024 was a challenging year for Marvel Studios. Both *Captain America: Brave New World* and *Thunderbolts* didn’t perform as well as expected at the box office, earning $415.1 million and $382.4 million worldwide, respectively. The live-action *Snow White* remake also disappointed, bringing in $205.6 million globally, and Pixar’s *Elio* struggled even more, becoming Pixar’s lowest-grossing film with just $154.2 million worldwide. While these films did find some success when released for home viewing, it wasn’t enough to offset their poor performance in theaters. It appears *Tron: Ares* is heading for a similar outcome.
Although Tron: Ares has a better score on Rotten Tomatoes than Tron: Legacy, critics haven’t exactly praised it. With a score of 56%, it’s considered a ‘rotten’ film, meaning it hasn’t generated much positive excitement. While viewers have enjoyed the film’s visuals and music, many found the story and characters lacking. A stronger critical reception could have helped Tron: Ares become a surprise hit, especially since there aren’t many similar big-budget sci-fi movies being released soon. However, the generally mixed reviews suggest it won’t stay popular for long, and its opening weekend numbers were lower than Legacy’s, indicating limited audience interest.
It’s understandable why Disney decided to make *Tron: Ares*. *Tron: Legacy* has become a favorite among a dedicated fanbase over the past 15 years, indicating interest in a sequel. Although it took a long time to develop, the timing of *Ares* feels right given how much AI and new technology are part of our lives today. Despite the $180 million production cost (not including marketing), *Ares* might not be profitable for Disney. Now, Disney is focusing on *Zootopia 2* and *Avatar: Fire and Ash* as final efforts to improve this year’s box office results, hoping for a better year in 2026.
