Disney’s Controversial 2025 Remake Overtaken by Yet Another New Release at the Box Office

Disney’s latest live-action remake has been facing numerous challenges lately. Instead of focusing on new, original concepts over the past few years, Disney has opted to revisit its classic titles. However, a 2025 live-action musical adaptation of one of Disney’s cherished animated masterpieces turned out to be a significant misstep for the studio, generating both criticism and disappointing box office returns. After receiving negative reviews from critics and underperforming financially, this movie was once again eclipsed by another 2025 release.

There isn’t much more to add about the live-action Snow White featuring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, except that it seems destined to go down in history as a major disappointment. Released in March amidst various social and political controversies, this big-budget production failed to attract audiences at the box office. As the months have passed, one hit movie after another has outperformed Snow White’s earnings, with Zach Cregger’s adult-oriented horror film Weapons being the latest example.

Titled “Weapons,” this gripping drama, featuring Julia Garner and Josh Brolin, revolves around a perplexing incident where 17 students from the same class go missing, leaving the community in a state of confusion about the culprit or cause. Released by Warner Bros. Pictures on August 8, 2025, “Weapons” has already amassed an impressive $119 million domestically and $207 million internationally within just a month. This means that “Weapons” has surpassed the earnings of “Snow White” in both domestic and global markets, as the Disney movie garnered only $87 million and $205 million at the box office.

Now White and Weapons Had Very Different Paths to the Big Screen

The unprecedented earnings of “Weapons” at the worldwide box office (ranking it at No. 15 among this year’s highest-grossing films), were significantly boosted by a successful and enigmatic viral marketing strategy that kept audiences guessing about the film’s storyline, sparking curiosity, and likely leading to increased ticket sales. Additionally, the movie entered theaters with highly favorable reviews from critics, boasting a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes – an impressive figure that certainly heightened interest in the film.

The tale of Snow White, unlike what was originally expected, faced numerous hurdles on its journey to the big screen. Challenges included disputes behind the scenes regarding casting, portraying the Seven Dwarves in live-action, and Zegler’s political opinions. Additionally, the film encountered opposition during production due to the 2023 Hollywood labor strikes. Despite hitting theaters, it didn’t prove to be the box office hit Disney may have anticipated, and has only received a 39% score from critics.

Although Snow White didn’t enjoy blockbuster success initially, it has found some footing upon being streamed, earning a 70% audience rating. Moreover, the film might be playing a part in shaping Disney’s future release strategy. Interestingly, Disney seems to be revising its approach to live-action remakes, potentially halting production on several beloved classics like Tangled and The Aristocats, a move that appears to have been influenced by Snow White’s lackluster reception.
