Disney’s Divisive 2025 Sci-Fi Blockbuster Finally Coming to Streaming This Week

Although Walt Disney Pictures doesn’t have any new theatrical releases until March, Disney+ is gearing up for a strong start to 2026 by adding recent blockbuster movies. While films like Zootopia 2 and Avatar: Fire and Ash aren’t available on the streaming service just yet, Disney+ is preparing to release Tron: Ares for viewers to enjoy at home.

The Tron movies returned to cinemas last year after a long break, but opinions were divided. Now, Tron: Ares is coming to Disney+ just three months after its theatrical release. That’s good news for Tron fans, who won’t have to wait long to watch Ares at home – it will be available in just a few days.

The latest Tron movie, directed by Joachim Rønning, arrives on the streaming service January 7th. This means all three Tron films will be available in one place for the first time, letting fans enjoy the complete saga from start to finish.

Will Tron: Ares End the Franchise?

As a movie buff, I’ve always found the Tron series to be a bit of a wild ride. The first Tron back in 1982 was really groundbreaking for its time, pushing the boundaries of what was possible with filmmaking. Though it wasn’t a massive blockbuster initially, it developed a dedicated following over the years. That’s what eventually led to Tron: Legacy in 2010. While Legacy had stunning visuals and an absolutely incredible soundtrack by Daft Punk, it didn’t quite win everyone over – critics and fans were pretty divided. Still, it did pretty well at the box office, bringing in around $409 million.

Fifteen years after Tron: Legacy, the new film Tron: Ares received similarly mixed reviews, scoring just above 50

Without the rise of streaming, the movie Ares might have been profitable through physical media sales. There are enough dedicated Tron fans who would have bought it, and some still will. However, Disney is now counting on revenue from ads shown on Disney+ to recoup its investment.

Considering how things turned out, it seems unlikely we’ll see another Tron movie. While the announcement of Ares was unexpected, its disappointing performance at the box office makes a fourth film seem very improbable.
