The movie adaptation of the cherished animated film “Lilo & Stitch” has now surpassed the billion-dollar mark at worldwide box offices, making it the first 2025 release to reach this milestone. Notably, the domestic gross of “Lilo & Stitch” accounts for over 40% of its total earnings ($416.2 million), thanks in large part to a record-breaking debut over Memorial Day Weekend, where it earned $183 million in just four days. The only other film to gross $400 million domestically this year is “A Minecraft Movie.” However, the appeal of “Lilo & Stitch” transcends borders, as it has become Mexico’s highest-grossing Disney live-action film ever and has also achieved significant success in various European and Latin American markets. Given its resounding success, it’s no wonder that last month, Disney announced that a sequel to the live-action “Lilo & Stitch” is already in production.
Alan Bergman, Co-Chairman of Disney Entertainment, acknowledged that the global adoration for ‘Lilo & Stitch’ is significant yet never assumed. He expressed pride in how the latest movie has resonated with viewers. He’s grateful to the filmmakers, actors, and the entire studio team who have contributed to its success. Looking ahead, he’s excited for more escapades with these beloved characters.
Disney’s Live-Action Lilo & Stitch Is a Blockbuster Box Office Hit
As a die-hard Disney fan, I’m thrilled to share that “Lilo & Stitch” has joined the exclusive club of billion-dollar films produced by Walt Disney Studios in the past year, alongside “Moana 2,” “Deadpool & Wolverine,” and “Inside Out 2.” Surprisingly, this film’s predecessor is over two decades old, and it didn’t boast the star power of “Deadpool & Wolverine” or the sequel status of “Moana 2” and “Inside Out 2.” Yet, the magic lies in its heartwarming family-oriented theme that seems to be the key to its success.
With a 71% positive rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, “Lilo & Stitch” truly shines when it comes to audience reviews, skyrocketing to an impressive 92%. Of course, comparisons to the original animated movie are inevitable, but this new version has managed to capture the hearts of viewers all over again.
The success of “Lilo & Stitch” doesn’t stop at the cinema ticket sales. The live-action remake has significantly increased the viewings of its animated version on Disney+. Globally, the original movie and related content such as the sequel “Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch” have accumulated an astounding 640 million minutes of viewing time. Unfortunately, no release date has been announced for when the live-action film will be available on the streaming platform.
The upcoming challenge for Lilo & Stitch lies in successfully launching a live-action sequel. The potential revenue of this sequel mirrors that of another successful Disney live-action remake, Aladdin from 2019, which surpassed the billion-dollar mark. Just like Aladdin, Disney has been planning a sequel, but progress has slowed due to director Guy Ritchie’s involvement in another Disney animated classic remake, Hercules. Details about the live-action Lilo & Stitch sequel are scarce, but it is likely that Disney is making every effort to bring back key contributors such as director Dean DeBlois, writers Chris Kekaniokalani Bright and Mike Van Waes, and stars Maia Kealoha (Lilo) and Sydney Agudong (Nani), who can swiftly return for the sequel.
Lilo & Stitch is currently playing in theaters.
