Disney’s New Movie Ending an 18-Year-Trend Is Quietly Great News for Pixar

Pixar is getting a boost from Disney’s latest film. The animation studio has faced challenges in recent years due to the pandemic and the growth of Disney+, which impacted box office numbers. While Inside Out 2 was a huge success, Hoppers isn’t expected to reach the same level. However, it’s performing well in theaters and should also attract viewers on Disney+, meaning it won’t depend on streaming to be successful.

Pixar plans to keep balancing brand new stories with sequels like Toy Story 5, Gatto, and Incredibles 3 in the coming years. Disney recently adjusted its movie schedule, and for the first time since 2011’s Winnie the Pooh, a Walt Disney Animation Studios film will be released in the summer – a time usually reserved for Pixar releases. To balance this, Pixar has a new, currently unnamed movie scheduled for November 21st, 2029.

Pixar’s 2029 Movie Is Likely Coco 2 – And It Should Be Huge

Pixar’s November film this year is very likely to be Coco 2. The sequel was announced about a year ago, and the original directors, Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina, are returning. While there haven’t been many updates since then – which is normal for animated films – a 2029 release date makes sense given the production timeline. It also fits with the original Coco, which was released in 2017 and was the last Pixar movie to debut during the Thanksgiving holiday instead of a Disney animated film.

As a film buff, I think the timing for Coco 2 really makes sense. The first Coco was all about Día de los Muertos, which happens around early November. While we might see the sequel a few weeks later here in the States, it’s a safe bet it’ll hit Mexican theaters before then, perfectly timed for the holiday. That’s smart – they can really lean into the cultural connection with some big marketing, and then ride that momentum into the Thanksgiving holiday here as well.

Pixar’s Coco was a huge success nearly ten years ago. It premiered in Mexico a month before its U.S. release and quickly became the highest-grossing film ever in that country, eventually earning $814 million worldwide. Among Pixar’s original films, only Inside Out ($858 million) and Finding Nemo ($940 million) have performed better. While sequels to both of those films surpassed $1 billion at the box office, the three most recent Pixar sequels – Inside Out 2, Toy Story 4, and Incredibles 2 – have all reached that milestone as well.

Following its release around two major holidays and being considered one of Pixar’s best films in a decade, Coco 2 is expected to be a huge success and likely earn over a billion dollars.

Coco is available to stream on Disney+.
