Disney’s Next Major Live-Action Reboot Gets First Real Update (And the Taylor Swift Rumors Were Dead Wrong)

Disney’s live-action remakes had a mixed year in 2025, with some films performing very well – one even earning over a billion dollars at the box office. Because of this success, Disney plans to continue making them. One remake, which had been stalled, has now received its first official update, and this update has also confirmed that Taylor Swift is not involved, putting those rumors to rest.

A recent report from The Hollywood Reporter indicates Disney secretly held screen tests and chemistry reads in London last week for the roles of Rapunzel and Flynn Rider. This is a significant advancement for the film. However, sources say Taylor Swift wasn’t involved in the testing, effectively ending those rumors. Additionally, Scarlett Johansson is no longer considered for the project.

Disney Goes Young Hollywood For Tangled Lead Roles, And Here’s Who Might Get the Role

The upcoming live-action Tangled film is looking to a new generation of stars, unlike the original animated movie where Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi voiced Rapunzel and Flynn Rider. Several young actresses reportedly screen-tested for the role of Rapunzel, including Freya Skye (known from Disney’s Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires), Sarah Catherine Hook (White Lotus), Tegan Croft (Titans), and Olivia-Mai Barrett (Invasion). Lola Tung (The Summer I Turned Pretty) was also considered, but couldn’t participate in testing due to other commitments.

Milo Manheim (from Disney’s Zombies), Charlie Gillespie (from Splitsville), and Gilli Jones all auditioned for the role of Flynn. Casting for the two main characters is expected to be finalized soon.

Scarlett Johansson was originally going to play the villain, Mother Gothel, in a live-action Tangled film. Mother Gothel imprisons Rapunzel to exploit the magical properties of her hair and maintain her youth. However, Johansson is no longer involved in that project and has instead joined the cast of The Batman Part II, though her role is currently a secret. Michael Gracey is directing The Batman Part II, but details about the film are still limited.

Although a specific release date for Tangled hasn’t been announced, filming is currently planned to begin in the UK in June 2026.
