As a seasoned movie buff with decades of cinematic experiences under my belt, I must say that Disney never ceases to surprise and delight us with their innovative takes on classic tales. The teaser for their live-action Snow White has me positively giddy! Rachel Zegler’s powerful voice brings a fresh, modern twist to the beloved princess, and the addition of an original song, “Waiting on a Wish,” only adds to the anticipation.
Disney delightfully unveiled a tantalizing sneak peek for its upcoming live-action “Snow White” production – a captivating original tune sung by lead actress Rachel Zegler. On Tuesday, the studio shared a one-minute clip featuring a snippet of the song and fresh scenes from the film due in cinemas on March 21, 2025. The enchanting melody, titled “Waiting on a Wish,” encapsulates Snow White’s internal struggle as she chooses to reveal her true self to the world.
The 1937 version of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” included 11 tunes, and it’s been confirmed that several will be included in the upcoming remake. As early as 2016, news broke about a new song being composed for this film, and now we get our first glimpse. The song “Waiting on a Wish” fits into the category of an “I Want” song – a term often used in musicals and notably during Disney’s ‘Renaissance’, which represents the main character’s dissatisfaction with their current situation and their aspirations for what lies ahead.
The modern, photorealistic reimagining by Disney of their classic animated tale, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves”, is heavily reliant on computer-generated imagery (CGI) to bring the dwarves and enchanting story elements to life. Notably, this film beats Disney’s previous remake, “Pinocchio,” which was first released in 1940, as the oldest animated movie they have adapted thus far. Interestingly, it is debuting in the same year as the live-action version of “Lilo & Stitch” and will be followed by the live-action adaptation of “Moana” just a year later – marking Disney’s quickest transition from animation to live-action yet.
In recent years, Disney has incorporated “desire songs” into their live-action reboots, such as “Waiting on a Wish,” penned by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul – who previously composed two original tunes for the 2019 Aladdin remake, including the character song “Speechless” for Jasmine (Naomi Scott). It is said that Pasek and Paul wrote several new songs for Snow White, although it remains to be seen which ones will make it into the film’s final version.
The upcoming film version of “Snow White” has generated much discussion and media attention even before its release. Online debates revolve around how to portray the Seven Dwarves, with the final decision being to create them digitally using CGI and having voice actors for their lines. The casting of Halle Bailey as Snow White also sparked controversy due to her Latina heritage, despite some people believing that a German actress would be more fitting for this adaptation of a traditional German fairy tale, given that she too has European ancestry.
In just a few short months, I’ll have the opportunity to witness the flawless execution of “Snow White” for myself as it graces the big screen on March 21, 2025. If you can’t wait that long, you can stream the original animated version right now on Disney+.
