Veronica Roth, who wrote the popular Divergent books, is writing two new novels to continue the series, fifteen years after the first books came out.
At BookCon in New York City, the author revealed she’s written new novels set in the world of Divergent. She told USA Today that these books aren’t a continuation of the original story, but rather explore a parallel universe where Tris makes a different choice about which faction to join.
In the story, Tris, played by Shailene Woodley in the movies, chooses to join the Dauntless group during the Choosing Ceremony, even though she grew up in the Abnegation group.
The story focuses on her attempts to find her place within a group known for its courage and somewhat rough ways. Author Veronica Roth has said she’s fascinated by the question of what defines Tris outside of being part of this group.
Fans of the series will likely wonder about this, since joining Dauntless is central to Tris’s journey of self-discovery and where she first meets Four, or Tobias Eaton, who is played by Theo James in the movies.
Despite the character making a different decision about which group to join, Roth hinted that we’ll likely see the same familiar faces reappear. She described figuring out how these characters reconnect as a particularly enjoyable aspect of the story.

The first book, titled The Sixth Faction, comes out on October 6th. Roth is eager for fans of the series to discover and share their thoughts on this new twist, which introduces a previously unseen group to the story.
Beginning with Divergent in 2011, the original novels—released each year after—showed readers Tris Prior’s life as a teenager in a post-apocalyptic Chicago. This city was divided into five distinct groups, or factions.
Tris soon realizes she doesn’t quite belong to any of the established groups, which means she’s Divergent. Afraid of being cast out, she hides her true self from everyone.
The book series was turned into three movies by Lionsgate: Divergent (released in 2014), Insurgent (2015), and Allegiant (2016).
A final movie, called Ascendant, was intended to conclude the series, but it was never produced. Readers and movie fans are now hoping the recent books will be adapted for the cinema.
