The announcement of Larian Studios’ new game was surprising, even to longtime fans, and raised a lot of questions. Many wondered if it would be a sequel to Divinity: Original Sin 2, and if the studio was abandoning its signature turn-based combat system. Larian founder and CEO Swen Vincke recently told Bloomberg that turn-based combat will, in fact, return in the new game.
The company is planning another attempt at an early access release, but they don’t expect it to happen in 2026. While they’re still keeping story details secret, they’re aiming for a scope and ambition that surpasses Baldur’s Gate 3.
Okay, so we’re finally letting loose with this new game! It’s a turn-based RPG, and it’s basically taking everything we’ve done before and really pushing it to the max. I think players are going to be blown away by how much we’ve improved things.
The studio first started working on a different game with Wizards of the Coast, but the developers weren’t passionate about it, even though the idea had potential. They shifted focus to Divinity last year, and while the studio is proud of Baldur’s Gate 3, they believe their current project will be even more successful.
Unlike games like Dungeons & Dragons, Larian didn’t need to adapt existing rules for a video game format. As they created the system specifically for the game, it’s much simpler to grasp.
On top of everything else, the new Divinity game is being built with a new engine. While there have been some initial challenges, the aim is to speed up development – the team believes a three to four year development cycle is more realistic than the six years it took for Baldur’s Gate 3. Players can still look forward to the same focus on strong storytelling as seen in Baldur’s Gate 3, and Larian is also working to improve how the game streams. More information will be shared soon.
