Gamers are enjoying a surge in video game adaptations lately. This year has already brought or will bring films based on popular games like Mortal Kombat 2, Street Fighter, Super Mario Galaxy, and Resident Evil. It’s taken a while for these adaptations to be taken seriously, but now even a famously controversial video game movie is finding a new audience thanks to streaming. If you’re a fan of the world of Azaroth, you’ll be especially excited to hear this!
The movie Warcraft, based on the popular World of Warcraft game, first appeared in theaters in 2016. The game itself has been a major online gathering place for gamers for years, and Blizzard continues to add new content and areas. Although the film didn’t do well in cinemas, it’s recently found a new audience through streaming. Surprisingly, Warcraft has climbed into the top ten most-watched movies on Amazon Prime Video, despite being released over a decade ago. Currently at number eight, it remains to be seen if this renewed interest will impact any future plans for the Warcraft universe.
A Warcraft Sequel?

The 2016 film Warcraft didn’t quite make enough money at the box office to cover its costs, falling short by a few million dollars. As a result, a sequel to the live-action adaptation of the video game was never produced, despite director Duncan Jones having talked about the possibility of a Warcraft 2 film.
You know, when people ask me which of my movies I’d revisit, I always end up saying Warcraft. It’s just such a strange case. It’s got this huge gap between what fans loved and what critics thought – bigger than almost any other movie I can think of. It didn’t do amazingly well financially here in the US, but it was a big hit overseas, which makes it even more interesting. It’s a really unique situation, and honestly, no one seems to know if a sequel will ever happen. I think studios are really cautious. It’s easy to shut down an idea, but it’s tough to greenlight something new because if it fails, you take the heat. Saying ‘no’ keeps your job; saying ‘yes’ could get you fired. And with Warcraft 2, everyone’s just hesitant to take that risk.
Jones said he’s cautiously optimistic. He believes the film might get made if its success in China proves it’s profitable, but he’s still waiting to see if that happens. He’s hoping the studio will decide to move forward with the project based on international performance.
