A new crime drama is available now on Netflix, but there’s a catch for those who start watching! Netflix has been adding lots of new shows and movies recently, and even more are coming next month. This particular series, starring an actor from Breaking Bad, has proven to be quite controversial, with people having very different opinions about it.
Fans can now watch Parish, the AMC series inspired by the BBC show Baby Driver, on Netflix. All six episodes, starring Giancarlo Esposito, became available on October 24th as part of a deal between AMC and Netflix that has brought several popular shows to the streaming service. In Parish, Esposito plays Gracian Parish, a father who turns back to crime after his son’s murder, putting him on a dangerous path against a powerful criminal organization. However, the show won’t be continuing, as AMC canceled Parish after one season.
Parish Divided Critics and Audiences
The TV series Parish received mixed reactions, sharply dividing both critics and viewers. While critics gave it a low score of 33% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences rated it much higher at 76%. Critics found the plot too crowded and rushed for its six episodes, calling it a typical crime drama lacking originality. However, viewers were captivated by the show’s quick pace and found it engaging.
Both critics and viewers praised Giancarlo Esposito’s performance, with The Hollywood Reporter describing him as a powerfully emotional lead. Melanie McFarland of Salon noted that Esposito’s talent deserved better material than the show provided, but he excelled anyway, making viewers wish for more substantial roles for him. Ultimately, Esposito carried the series; his portrayal of a man struggling with morality was the show’s biggest strength and almost made the entire series worthwhile.
Why Was Parish Canceled After Season 1?
AMC canceled the show Parish after only one season, but didn’t explain why, simply stating they couldn’t move forward with a second season. The cancellation was likely due to low viewership. While Parish started with promising numbers, ratings dropped significantly – by week five, the audience was less than half the size it was at the beginning. This steep decline probably led to the show’s cancellation, though specific viewership figures haven’t been released.
As a big fan of atmospheric, character-driven shows, I was thrilled to see Parish land on Netflix! It’s joined by a bunch of other AMC favorites I love, like The Walking Dead, Interview with the Vampire, Dark Winds, Mayfair Witches, Better Call Saul, and of course, Breaking Bad. It’s a great time to be a fan!
