Big names in the DJ world like Fat Boy Slim, Judge Jules, and Pete Tong have achieved both fame and fortune, making them role models for many young people. Our editor, for example, once dreamed of DJ stardom – even calling himself ‘DJ Wakner’ – until he realized the name wasn’t as impressive as he’d hoped, ending his brief career. In contrast, ‘DJ Ahmet’ refers to a very different person: a quiet teenage boy named Ahmet Jakup, living with his widowed father and mute younger brother Naim in a remote village in North Macedonia.

So who is DJ Ahmet?

Growing up, Ahmet and his sibling were pulled out of school to help their father with his small sheep farming business. It’s no surprise he longed for something more, and he found it unexpectedly while looking for a lost sheep – a secret rave in the countryside. This moment was a revelation, reminiscent of the pre-1994 rave scene – a time when, amidst a fading Conservative government, the freedom of losing yourself in music and dancing with others offered a vital escape.

Ahmet notices his neighbor, Aya (Dora Akan Zlatanova), is also trying to briefly escape an arranged marriage. He quickly falls for her, and they become friends through their shared passion for dance music – a hobby that goes against the traditions of their community.

Should you rave about this film?

This film has a lot going for it! The two main actors are captivating, and the child actors are equally charming. Director Georgi M. Unkovski skillfully blends humor throughout, like the funny moment when the call to prayer from a mosque is accidentally replaced with the Windows startup sound. The film opens and closes with a group of women acting as a sort of Greek chorus, and while it seems to be heading towards a typical story about young people rebelling against tradition, it takes an unexpected turn. Ultimately, it’s a joyful and often funny coming-of-age story that celebrates the freedom and escape found through music. DJ Ahmet is a real gem of a film.
