Doctor Doom is making his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as imagined in this fan art for Avengers: Doomsday. Robert Downey Jr. will play Victor Von Doom, a role confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. The film is also bringing back 26 other actors from previous Marvel movies. With Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor’s stories evolving, this new installment could introduce a fresh trio of heroes to become the MCU’s next leading team.
During the first eleven years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor were the main heroes, especially when fighting Thanos. Now, as the MCU starts a new chapter, Mister Fantastic, Cyclops, and the new Captain America (Sam Wilson) could become the leading figures. A fan artist named @arifinity_ shared artwork on Instagram showing this new team facing off against Doctor Doom, and it looks fantastic – many fans are excited to see them together on screen for the first time.
Why Mister Fantastic, Cyclops & Captain America Could Be the MCU’s Next “Big Three”

During the first eleven years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) each starred in three individual movies – more than any other superhero. This made them the central figures of that era, often called the “Big Three.” However, with Iron Man’s death in Avengers: Endgame, Captain America’s retirement, and Thor’s uncertain path, the MCU needs new heroes to lead the way. Characters like Mister Fantastic, Cyclops, and the new Captain America would be excellent choices to take on that role.
After Steve Rogers retired, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) became the new Captain America, and fans are hoping he’ll remain a major character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the Fantastic Four joining the main MCU storyline, their leader, Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), is also expected to play a key role. The same should be true for the leader of the X-Men, likely Scott Summers, making him one of the next generation of central heroes alongside Captain America and Mr. Fantastic. The actor to play Scott Summers hasn’t been revealed yet.
These heroes are all team leaders and among the most powerful in the Marvel Universe, making them natural candidates for a new ‘Big Three.’ While a new actor hasn’t been cast as Cyclops yet, James Marsden will return to the role from the X-Men films in Avengers: Doomsday, alongside Anthony Mackie and Oscar Isaac. This could be a way to test out this new team dynamic before a younger actor takes on the role of Cyclops in the upcoming X-Men reboot within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
