Doctor Doom Will Steal a Major Kang Storyline For Avengers: Doomsday

A recent report indicates that the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie will borrow a significant plotline originally intended for Kang the Conqueror. Avengers 5 faced a lot of changes during its development. It was initially planned as The Kang Dynasty, written by Michael Waldron (the writer of Loki) and starring Jonathan Majors as Kang. However, those plans were scrapped around 2023 or 2024. Instead, Stephen McFeely, a co-writer of Endgame, joined the Russo Brothers to create a Doomsday script that will feature Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.

Before the planned release of The Kang Dynasty, audiences were introduced to Jonathan Majors’ character and his different versions in Loki and Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. However, with Doomsday just over a year away and filming completed, very little is known about the MCU’s Doctor Doom—including whether the character has even truly been introduced yet—or how much of the original plan for Kang remains in the current script.

According to a new rumor shared by entertainment insider Daniel Richtman on Patreon, the upcoming 2026 Avengers: Doomsday movie might include multiple versions of Doctor Doom, potentially featuring female variants of the character.

This storyline mirrors Marvel’s initial concept for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, where the Avengers would have been divided and faced off against various versions of Kang the Conqueror, as introduced in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania.

Looking back, I think Marvel really painted themselves into a corner with that post-credits scene in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. By showing all those different Kangs – the entire Council – all looking like Jonathan Majors, it’s made the whole situation with recasting that role a lot more complicated. It would have been easier if they’d introduced a completely new Variant, but now it feels like any replacement would be…off.

It’s uncertain if the Marvel Cinematic Universe will follow a pattern of having every version of Doctor Doom portrayed by the same actor, like Robert Downey Jr. However, that seems unlikely. Fans have already seen different versions of the character played by Julian McMahon and Toby Kebbell in previous Fantastic Four movies from 2005 and 2015.

Although actor Kebbell has said he wasn’t very good as Doctor Doom and probably won’t reprise the role, Marvel Studios could use these scenes to give fans what they want. Actors like Mads Mikkelsen, Henry Cavill, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Javier Bardem might make a brief appearance in Avengers 5.

The likelihood of seeing female versions of characters suggests different actors will play these roles. A previous rumor, reported by Daniel Richtman, indicated that Ana de Armas, who starred in No Time to Die, was considered for a part in Avengers 5. This could have been a brief appearance as a variant of Doctor Doom.

Doctor Doom usually prefers to operate by himself. However, there was a brief period in Marvel Comics where multiple versions of Doom came together. This group was led by the main Doctor Doom from Earth-616 and consisted of other Dooms who had previously been mentally altered by a council of Reed Richards from different dimensions.

If the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday features several versions of Doctor Doom, they’ll probably be fighting amongst themselves. This could also mean Doctor Doom might be played by a different actor after Avengers: Secret Wars, potentially someone less expensive than Robert Downey Jr., as some rumors suggest.

Doctor Doom and Kang’s Masterplans Have the Same Goal

Whether it was originally planned as The Kang Dynasty or Doomsday, the ultimate plan for the fifth Avengers movie was always to lead into Avengers: Secret Wars. It appears that both Kang, as played by Jonathan Majors, and now Doctor Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., were heading towards the creation of Battleworld, just like in the 2015 Secret Wars comic book series.

The villains in Avengers 5 have slightly different reasons for bringing together pieces of the Multiverse to create this chaotic new reality. Unlike the Kangs, who wanted to conquer, Doctor Doom believes he’s the hero and the only one capable of stopping the Multiversal Incursions that are causing problems.

It’s currently unclear what role Doctor Doom will play in Doomsday, and how that will compare to Kang the Conqueror. While it’s unlikely Doctor Doom would form a council of alternate versions of himself, he would probably trust his other selves with his plans involving the Multiverse.

However, viewers should expect a major twist: most characters will ultimately be betrayed, leaving only the Doctor Doom variant played by Robert Downey Jr. in control of Battleworld. Following his expected loss in Secret Wars, there’s space for a new actor to take on the role of Victor von Doom when the universe resets to Earth-616, potentially setting up a future rivalry with Reed Richards and the Fantastic Four.
