Doctor Doom’s appearance is highlighting a particularly memorable line from what’s considered the weakest Avengers movie so far. After Robert Downey Jr.’s fantastic portrayal of Iron Man throughout the Infinity Saga, Avengers: Endgame gave the first MCU hero a fitting and emotional conclusion – sacrificing himself to save the world from Thanos. Though Iron Man’s influence continues in the franchise, the 2019 film largely felt like Downey Jr.’s final goodbye to the role and the universe.
For a while, it seemed Robert Downey Jr.’s time as Iron Man was over. But the announcement that he’d be back for Avengers: Doomsday changed everything. However, he won’t be playing Tony Stark again like Chris Evans will as Captain America. Instead, Downey Jr. will be taking on the role of Doctor Doom, the main villain of the Multiverse Saga. Details about the movie and the character are scarce, as marketing has focused on the heroes. Despite the lack of information, Doctor Doom’s appearance will give new meaning to a famous line from Iron Man in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Iron Man Claimed He Saw Himself Killing The Avengers In Age of Ultron

While not as popular as other Marvel films, Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) set up key plot points for the larger Infinity Saga. For Tony Stark, the movie marked the beginning of his fear about a potential alien invasion, a fear that ultimately proved correct with Thanos’ arrival. He had trouble sharing his concerns with the team, and his most honest conversation was with Nick Fury after Ultron’s plan failed. Stark described a terrifying vision caused by Wanda Maximoff, where he saw his fellow Avengers dead, leading him to believe, “I’m the man who killed the Avengers.”
Fury attempted to persuade Stark that he was worrying about a problem that didn’t actually exist, but Stark was deeply troubled by the possibility of failing to protect his friends and the planet. This fear drove him to create the Ultron Program. Initially, this moment was seen as foreshadowing the future arrival of Thanos, which later proved correct. Even after Ultron’s defeat, this vision continued to guide Stark’s actions.
After the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, everything Tony Stark did was driven by his desire to prevent another catastrophic loss. This was the core of his beliefs during the conflict in Captain America: Civil War, and he continued to tirelessly protect Earth, as shown in Avengers: Infinity War. He likely had this same fear in mind when he took the Infinity Gauntlet from Thanos and snapped his fingers in Avengers: Endgame, sacrificing himself to avoid another devastating event, especially now that Spider-Man was under his care and his daughter, Morgan, was born.
Avengers: Doomsday Could Mean That Tony Stark Saw Doctor Doom And Not Him

After more than ten years and many shifts in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the introduction of Doctor Doom gives a new significance to the ominous prediction Tony Stark made in Avengers: Age of Ultron. With the casting of the villain, it’s possible the figure Iron Man saw in his vision—created by Wanda—wasn’t a future version of himself, but Victor von Doom. Marvel’s Kevin Feige and the Russo brothers have kept the villain shrouded in secrecy, so fans haven’t gotten a clear look yet. The closest glimpse came in the post-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps. However, even with Doctor Doom’s scarred face, Stark would likely have recognized him, as it bears a striking resemblance to his own.
Marvel excelled in the Infinity Saga by cleverly connecting minor details to larger storylines, creating the illusion that everything was meticulously planned. They can recapture that magic in the Multiverse Saga by linking Doctor Doom’s appearance to the vision Tony Stark had in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Expanding on what Iron Man actually saw in that frightening premonition and showing how it relates to the threat Doom poses would deepen the villain’s backstory within the MCU. This is especially important now, as it would help establish the character as a major player with the final films still in development.
Doctor Doom is usually seen with his mask and armor in Marvel comics. While the movie might stay true to that look, it’s hard to believe Marvel Studios won’t show at least some of the actor’s face as the villain, even if it’s scarred. Revealing the face could connect Doctor Doom to the vision Tony Stark had in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Marvel already managed to do something similar with Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man during the Infinity Saga, so they’re likely to find a way to do it again in Avengers: Doomsday.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
