With the new Doctor Who spin-off, ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea,’ getting closer to release, Russell T Davies has given a recent update about the Christmas special planned for 2026.
The BBC has announced that Doctor Who will be back for a Christmas special next year. The episode will be written by the show’s current head writer, and it will air after the show’s agreement with Disney ends.
Davies isn’t sharing specifics about the special right now, but he has assured fans that the entire storyline is already planned. He stated, “I know exactly what happens, so you don’t need to worry.”
Good news for Doctor Who fans! A new spin-off series, “The War Between the Land and the Sea,” will be released on December 7th to keep us entertained while we wait for the next full series.
Okay, so I just finished watching this new five-part series, and let me tell you, it really grabbed me. It centers around a totally relatable guy, Barclay, played brilliantly by Russell Tovey. He’s just living his life when, out of nowhere, he gets pulled into this massive effort to stop a global crisis. And the threat? The return of the classic Doctor Who villains, the Sea Devils! It’s a wild ride watching him get caught up in all of it.
During his journey, he’ll form a surprising bond with Salt, played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and they will both be profoundly changed by the experience.

Davies recently shared with TopMob that the show will address the climate crisis. He explained that all writers are currently grappling with how to approach this critical issue, noting that we’re already experiencing the effects of climate change, and the series simply portrays this reality in a dramatic way.
He explained that when the BBC first asked him to return to Doctor Who in 2021, he immediately shared this initial concept, which he’d actually developed on his own beforehand.

So, I was hearing about this new show, and the actor Tovey was talking about his character at a TV festival. Apparently, it’s a really cool story about an ordinary guy – just a regular office worker who books taxis, believe it or not! – who somehow gets thrust into a hugely important position. It’s all about him figuring out what that means and how to handle it, which sounds fascinating.
Just like Doctor Who, his character was all about saving the world. It was really fun to play an ordinary guy who’d reached his late 30s or early 40s and simply assumed that’s what his life would be like.
I really love how it turned out. I hope it gives people a sense of hope and possibility, like things can change at any time. I’m incredibly proud of the work, but also a little scared and really excited about sharing it. The whole process was fantastic, and the writing was excellent.
