Doctor Who and Coronation Street icons confirmed for new episodes of Celebrity Mastermind – and they’re coming soon

The popular quiz show Celebrity Mastermind is back for a new season! Clive Myrie will once again host as four celebrities test their knowledge under pressure in the famous black chair.

I’m so excited – the show is coming back on Monday, December 22nd at 7:30pm! You’ll be able to catch it on BBC Two and iPlayer. And get this – Maryam Moshiri, Chesney Hawkes, Desiree Burch, and Danny Robins are the first guests when it returns, which is a fantastic lineup!

I’m really excited about this year’s cast – it’s such a fun mix of people! You’ve got Sally Ann Mathews from Coronation Street, and Sophie Aldred, who I loved in Doctor Who. Plus, Alexander Dragonetti from The Traitors is joining, as is Nikita Kuzmin, the pro dancer from Strictly Come Dancing, and the amazing drag artist Tia Kofi. It’s a surprisingly diverse group and I can’t wait to see them all together!

Celebrity contestants will show off their expertise in a chosen topic, then answer a range of general knowledge questions – all while trying to beat the clock.

John Myrie has been the host of Mastermind and its celebrity spin-off for almost five years, a role he considers a significant responsibility.

Myrie explained that with the program running for more than fifty years and playing a significant role in UK culture, there was considerable pressure to deliver.

I’m rooting for the contestants to succeed, and I hope the show focuses more on their accomplishments – like making it onto Mastermind and advancing through the competition – rather than just on when someone makes a mistake.

I love encouraging people to succeed and celebrating what they’re capable of. When I see someone really struggling, especially when the pressure feels overwhelming, I really want them to push through and do their best. It’s incredibly rewarding for me – and I’m sure for anyone watching – when they achieve something great. Ultimately, it’s about celebrating knowledge and the joy of people reaching their full potential.

Since becoming a questioner in 2021, Myrie has asked celebrities 6,671 questions in total, including 2,835 about their specialist subjects and 3,836 questions testing their general knowledge.

Reflecting on the last four years, Myrie noted the diverse range of topics covered, including popular culture like Marvel films, the Karate Kid movies, and Prince’s album ‘Sign o’ the Times’. He explained that this wide variety is to be expected.

He mentioned a diverse range of past show topics, including UK punk rock chosen by footballer Stuart Pearce, the history of ice cream by James Acaster, and even Peppa Pig covered by Royal Correspondent Jennie Bond. Other subjects have included historical figures like Lady Jane Grey and Grigori Rasputin, Robert Schumann’s musical year, and Margaret Thatcher.

I really enjoy the variety of topics we cover. It’s what keeps things interesting and prevents it from becoming repetitive – no two weeks are ever quite the same.

Celebrity Mastermind returns on Monday 22nd December at 7:30pm on BBC Two and iPlayer.
