Okay, Whovians, get ready! With the new five-part series, The War Between the Land and the Sea, just around the corner, I recently chatted with the show’s creator – a real legend in the Doctor Who universe – about whether we can expect to see even more connections to the wider Whoniverse. It’s exciting stuff, and they’ve hinted at possibilities!
This mini-series follows Kate Lethbridge-Stewart (Jemma Redgrave), the head of UNIT—a taskforce dealing with extraterrestrial threats—along with Colonel Christofer Ibrahim (Alexander Devrient) and new recruit Barclay (Russell Tovey). Together, they work to stop a worldwide crisis caused by the return of the Doctor’s enemies, the Sea Devils.
I’m so excited about the new series! It’s bringing back some classic villains we first saw way back with Jon Pertwee in 1972. But it’s not just nostalgia – it’s also connected to Torchwood, especially the really intense ‘Children of Earth‘ storyline. And get this – Colin McFarlane is returning as General Austin Pierce, which is amazing! It feels like everything is coming full circle.

One of the most intense storylines in the show’s continuation featured the return of the 456 aliens. They threatened to wipe out humanity unless the British government surrendered 10% of the world’s children.
The government decided to eliminate all members of Torchwood to hide their secret history with aliens, which began in 1965. This decision backfired and had terrible results for the team.

The new spin-off, focused on UNIT, will again explore a high-stakes conflict between humans and another alien species. Russell T Davies explains they’re approaching this encounter as a diplomatic mission, with formal negotiations. He describes it as a very different show with unique events, and hopes viewers will notice similarities between scenes and those from previous episodes filmed in the same locations.
We’re excited to see what fans create after “The War Between the Land and the Sea” premieres this December! We know they’ll make some amazing edits of the crossover event.
