Doctor Who boss says plans for 2026 Christmas special left BBC bosses “with jaws agape”

Doctor Who is coming back to television in just over a year, and early reports suggest it will be a fantastic return.

The science fiction series will return with a special episode at Christmas 2026, and it was recently announced that showrunner Russell T Davies is writing it.

Russell T Davies recently told BBC Newsbeat that filming for the Doctor Who special hasn’t begun. He joked that he knows the plot, but needs to write it down quickly, ‘just in case’ something unexpected happens.

I heard he confirmed they have shared the plot details with the BBC executives, and apparently, they were absolutely blown away – seriously, jaws dropped and they loved everything they saw! It sounds like we’re in for something really special.

Russell T Davies recently hinted at details for the 2026 Christmas special of Doctor Who in his Doctor Who Magazine column. He revealed the episode will include the words “Bafflers,” “Winternox,” and “village.”

The most recent season of Doctor Who ended with a huge surprise, bringing Ncuti Gatwa’s run as the Doctor to an exciting finish. In the final scene, the Doctor started to regenerate, but the new form turned out to be a familiar face – Billie Piper! Her quick appearance left fans shocked and sparked a lot of discussion about the future of the show.

I’m so excited for what’s coming next! And the good news is, we don’t have to wait long for more from this world. A brand new spin-off series, ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea’, starts tomorrow, Sunday, December 7th, on BBC One and you can also watch it on iPlayer. It’s going to be amazing!

This five-episode story moves the spotlight from the Doctor to UNIT, a military organization, as the world faces a growing threat. An old race of beings is rising from the oceans, and they could start a war with humanity.

Starring Russell Tovey and created by Russell T Davies, the new series promises a mix of exciting science fiction and relatable, emotional stories. Initial reactions indicate it will also include connections to the original series, offering a treat for dedicated viewers.
