The recent Doctor Who Christmas special quietly changed a long-standing rule of the show: the Doctor stopped using the name “John Smith” as an alias. While the Doctor’s real name has always been a secret – something that became a key part of the story during Matt Smith’s time as the Doctor – they frequently use fake names, and “John Smith” had appeared surprisingly often throughout the show’s history.
The Doctor has gone by many names throughout his adventures. One notable alias, “John Smith,” was first suggested by companion Jamie McCrimmon in a 1968 episode called “The Wheel in Space.” The Third Doctor, played by Jon Pertwee, embraced the name while living on Earth, and even David Tennant’s Doctor used it, famously as a clue in the 2006 episode “School Reunion.” However, after using “John Smith” for years, the Doctor has now decided to go by something new.
The Doctor’s New Alias Explained
Growing tired of using the alias ‘John Smith’, the Doctor decided to pick a new, seemingly ordinary name – he settled on ‘Clint Rock’.

In the 2024 Doctor Who Christmas Special, “Joy to the World,” Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor went undercover at the Time Hotel to protect history. While doing so, he quickly invented the alias “Special Agent Clint Rock.” This was a spontaneous, made-up name, and fans have been wondering why he chose it. It’s likely he simply grabbed the first name that sounded somewhat ordinary, highlighting his unfamiliarity with human customs.
Or, this could show the Doctor making a playful, self-aware choice. “Clint Rock” isn’t a realistic name – it sounds like something from a classic 1960s action movie. If that’s true, it makes sense the Doctor would think it’s a fitting name for a secret agent. He might be a fan of old television and hasn’t fully separated fantasy from reality.
The Doctor Will Always Need An Alias

The Doctor consistently requires a pseudonym because ‘doctor’ identifies a profession, not a personal name. While ‘John Smith’ was once a suitable placeholder – historically used for unidentified individuals due to its commonality – both ‘John’ and ‘Smith’ are becoming less frequent names today.
For many fans of Doctor Who, the name “John Smith” simply evokes fond memories. However, the show’s 2024 Christmas special did something different, introducing a new alias that reveals more about the Doctor’s personality instead of just pleasing the audience. It’s a clever and effective twist.
