Our lineup for the upcoming legal drama is now finalized, as filming for the series titled “Counsels” started recently in Glasgow at the BBC.
The watch is often referred to as a “high-stakes” piece. In essence, it portrays the lives of a small group of lawyers in their mid-twenties who are based in Glasgow. This is a period when they’ve been out of university for a few years and finally, their careers have reached a critical stage where things start to get serious.
This new eight-part series was jointly created by Scottish writers Bryan Elsley (known for Skins and The Crow Road) and Gillian McCormack, a graduate from the BBC Writers’ Drama Room. Notably, it features a group of up-and-coming actors as well as some recognizable faces in the acting world, including Michelle Gomez, who has previously appeared on Doctor Who.
In various sci-fi series, Gomez was often recognized for playing Missy. From seasons 8 to 10 of Doctor Who, she frequently reappeared. Additionally, she produced her own Doctor Who audio dramas with the title character.
The narrative focus in Counsels primarily explores the intricate and sometimes chaotic lives of its central lawyers, featuring Brandon Grace (My Lady Jane) portraying Jamie, Ro Kumar (Traces) as Bav, Eilidh Park (Wind of Change) as Nadine, George Prentice (The Pendragon Cycle) as Alasdair, Alyth Ross (Last Light) as Katie, and Rebecca Bell (Outlander: Blood of My Blood) as Karina.

Among the talented actors gracing our screen, I’m thrilled to see Gomez, Derek Riddell (from Happy Valley), Laura Haddock (known for What It Feels Like For A Girl), Daniela Nardini (renowned from This Life), Michael Nardone (The Night Manager), Sally Howitt (River City), Stuart Bowman (Department Q), Neshla Caplan (The Rig) and Stephen Purdon (also from River City). What a star-studded lineup!
In a nutshell, this drama series follows various professionals navigating the complex world of law, whether they’re serving as public prosecutors, polished lawyers for big business, or the compassionate final hope for those who have lost everything. Their ultimate goal? To come out on top.
These individuals are competing for promotions while also being romantically involved, their professional and personal lives becoming increasingly competitive. Now, it seems that tensions are about to reach a boiling point.
Announcing the cast and start of filming in Glasgow, series co-creator and co-writer Elsley expressed his excitement about collaborating with Gillian McCormack on “Counsels”. He shared that they are eager to showcase an array of talented actors, writers, and directors from Scotland. By setting the entire series in Glasgow, their goal is to depict the city authentically and populate it with engaging stories and characters.
Likewise, McCormack, who is a co-creator and co-writer for the series, stated: “It’s been fantastic collaborating with Bryan. Watching our outstanding team and exceptional cast mesh together has been a pleasure. Crafting our characters and their environments has been an enriching process, and I’m eager to unveil their tales against the vibrant, thrilling, and modern cityscape of Glasgow, a place I hold immense pride for.
At the moment, there’s no announced release date for “Counsels,” but since production is currently happening, we’ll soon learn more intriguing updates about it.
