Doctor Who future finally confirmed by BBC with result of Disney+ deal and Christmas special details

The BBC has announced that Doctor Who will continue, but Disney will no longer be involved in producing future seasons of the show.

However, the show will return in 2026 with a new Christmas special, written by Russell T Davies.

Lindsay Salt, BBC’s Director of Drama, released a statement thanking Disney+ for their excellent partnership and collaboration over the last two seasons, as well as for the upcoming series, The War Between the Land and the Sea.

As a huge Doctor Who fan, I’m thrilled to hear the BBC is still completely dedicated to the show! It’s fantastic news that Russell T Davies is returning to write another Christmas special – I can’t wait to see what he comes up with for 2026. It’s such a beloved series, and I’m really glad it’s continuing.

Fans can rest assured the Doctor will be back, and we’ll share details about the next season soon. The TARDIS will continue to be a central part of the BBC.

Later this year, BBC One and BBC iPlayer will premiere ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea,’ a new Doctor Who spin-off featuring Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. A Doctor Who animated series for younger viewers on CBeebies is also being created.

The show’s future has been in limbo for some time, with Disney’s decision taking some time to come.

Kate Phillips, the BBC’s head of content, has stated that the show will go on with or without Disney’s involvement.

Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, she reassured fans that Doctor Who isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Our collaboration with Disney has been fantastic, and will continue with ‘The War Between The Land And The Sea’ next year. However, regardless of our relationship with Disney, Doctor Who will remain a BBC program.

Wow, the season finale of Doctor Who was incredible! Seeing Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor regenerate into Billie Piper was a total shock – I definitely didn’t see that coming, and I know a lot of other fans were just as stunned. It was a really powerful moment, and I’m still processing it!

Everyone is eagerly waiting to see what happens next with this situation, both publicly and privately. Will the BBC team up with another company? Or will they continue on their own? And will Piper be involved again? Stay tuned for updates – it’s going to be interesting!

Doctor Who is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
