Colin Baker, who famously played the Sixth Doctor, has shared his thoughts on the latest puzzle in Doctor Who. The season 15 finale surprised viewers when Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor transformed into Billie Piper, the actress well-known for her role as the companion to the Ninth and Tenth Doctors, Rose.
Following the broadcast of the episode, there’s been a lot of discussion about what happened, with viewers pointing out that while Piper was introduced in the credits, she wasn’t introduced as the Doctor – something that typically happens after previous regenerations.
I was just chatting with the Oxford Mail, and I’m with other fans who think Ncuti Gatwa isn’t actually playing *the* Doctor. When asked about it, I honestly said, “I don’t have a clue, but I suspect it’s a load of old malarky.” It just doesn’t feel right, you know?
He explained, “I believe they were at a loss for words, which led to that action.” He continued, “I suspect Billie Piper will be involved in some capacity, but if she isn’t the Doctor, who could she be?”
“She’s someone else! It’s like me being the Master. Well, I could be, I suppose.”

Baker went on to say, “It’s possible she’s a doppelganger, but the writers can create any scenario they want – that’s what makes the show so fun. They have complete creative freedom, so if they decide to go that route, they absolutely could.”
When asked who he’d like to see take on the role of the Sixteenth Doctor, Baker responded: “I think it would be quite nice if it was someone completely different. I’d pick my daughter, Rosie, she’d be very good.”
Baker shares the same opinions as his predecessor, Peter Davison, who famously starred as the Fifth Doctor. Davison had previously described Piper’s return to the show as “a completely mad idea”.
“I don’t believe she’s the Doctor,” Davison explained. “It feels more like a surprise twist added to the last episode-a way to shock the audience with a ‘Whoa, what’s that?’ moment. And then, almost immediately, the feeling is like, ‘Let’s move past this.’”
I really enjoyed her company, and she’s doing incredibly well in her career with lots of opportunities. I just can’t understand why she’d willingly choose to move back to Cardiff for a year.
However, Christopher Eccleston, who played the Ninth Doctor, stated in 2022 that he’d be interested in seeing Billie Piper take on the role of the Doctor, and even expressed a desire for the fans to “all struggle with it“.
Doctor Who is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
