Doctor Who icon David Tennant returns as the Tenth Doctor for 15 brand new adventures with Big Finish

Good news for Doctor Who fans! David Tennant is returning to reprise his role as the Tenth Doctor just in time for the show’s Christmas return.

David Tennant isn’t returning to television as the Doctor, at least not yet. However, he will reprise his role in a new series of audio dramas from Big Finish, featuring 15 brand new adventures as the Doctor.

Starting in the summer of 2027, twelve new stories will be released every two months. In addition, a special box set featuring the Tenth Doctor alongside past versions of himself is planned, though a release date for that set hasn’t been announced yet.

David Tennant, reprising his role as the Tenth Doctor, joked that working with Big Finish is effortless: ‘You show up, enjoy yourself, and before you know it, you’ve saved the world again!’

Nicholas Briggs, creative director at Big Finish, also mentioned they’re always hoping David Tennant will come back. He’s a very popular and busy actor, and it’s often difficult for him to schedule time to record with them.

Although David Tennant doesn’t seem to be reprising his role in the TV series – his last appearance as the Fourteenth Doctor was in the 60th anniversary specials in 2023 – his former co-star Billie Piper, who played alongside him as the Tenth Doctor, will be returning.

The latest episode of the show concluded with Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor transforming into Piper. However, it’s unclear if Piper is truly the new Doctor, or if there’s a different explanation for what happened.
