The future of Doctor Who has been unclear for months. After Ncuti Gatwa left the show, many worried about its survival, even with the BBC and Disney+ partnering for two new seasons and a spinoff called The War Between the Land and the Sea. Just recently, a former writer suggested the show was in serious trouble. Now, fans have received an update, and while not unexpected, the news is likely disappointing.
The BBC announced that Disney+ will no longer be involved in producing future seasons of the show, bringing their two-year collaboration to a close. It’s currently unknown whether this change affects where people can watch the series, or just how it’s made. However, Doctor Who will continue, as long as the BBC finds another production company to work with.
Disney Dumps Doctor Who Partnership, But a New Christmas Special Is Confirmed
Although Disney is no longer co-producing new seasons of Doctor Who, the show isn’t over. The BBC has confirmed a new Christmas special is planned for 2026, penned by Russell T Davies. The BBC also assures fans they are still dedicated to Doctor Who and will share details about future seasons soon to keep the Doctor’s adventures going.
As a huge Doctor Who fan, I was so pleased to hear the BBC reaffirm their commitment to the show! Lindsay Salt, the Director of Drama, recently shared that they’re incredibly grateful for Disney+’s partnership over the last two seasons – and for the upcoming special, The War Between the Land and the Sea. What’s even better is Russell T Davies is already writing another Christmas special for 2026! The BBC has assured us the Doctor isn’t going anywhere, and they’ll be revealing plans for a new series soon, meaning the TARDIS will stay right where it belongs – with the BBC.
The BBC has announced that The War Between the Land and the Sea will be available on BBC iPlayer and BBC One later this year, meaning it won’t be shown on Disney+. In addition, the BBC is creating a new animated series for CBeebies, but details about the story and its connection to the Doctor Who universe are still unknown.
Disney has ended its partnership with the BBC and Doctor Who, likely due to financial considerations. When the deal was originally announced, it was described with optimistic language, promising a collaborative creative future and wider availability of the show on Disney+ for years to come.
Although there was hope that the new series would attract viewers and boost subscriptions to Disney+, it didn’t perform as well as expected. A source at Disney previously described the show’s performance as “okay, but not stellar,” which explains why the collaboration has been discontinued.
