Doctor Who legend Paul McGann responds to claims that he’ll make a comeback in 2026 special

As a huge Doctor Who fan, I was really hoping to see Paul McGann return for the 2026 Christmas special, but sadly, he’s said it’s not going to happen. He’s put all the rumors to rest, which is disappointing, but at least we have a clear answer now.

The BBC has announced that despite Disney+ no longer being involved, Doctor Who will return for a Christmas special next year. The episode will be written by the show’s current boss, Russell T Davies.

Last November, Davies admitted he hadn’t begun writing the special. However, photos of Peter Davison’s Eighth Doctor and Billie Piper appearing to film a scene together quickly spread online, leading fans to speculate that filming had already started.

On a recent episode of The Gerry Anderson Podcast, Paul McGann explained to hosts Richard James and Chris Dale that the images were created using artificial intelligence.

He mentioned that he and Billie Piper recently worked together, though he was playfully suggesting it was just a wishful thought. This sparked rumors and speculation among people who hoped it was true.

Richard James playfully suggested the rumor might be true, joking, “Maybe you’re just not allowed to talk about it?”

McGann then joked: “You’re making this thing worse. You’re part of the problem”.

Davies might not have started penning the special yet, but he already has the plot all worked out.

We’ve got a new Doctor Who spin-off, ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea,’ currently airing on BBC One and available to stream on iPlayer, which should keep fans entertained for a while.

The series, created by Davies, follows Barclay (Russell Tovey), an ordinary man unexpectedly chosen to represent humanity after the sudden reappearance of an ancient race known as the Sea Devils.

Tovey stars in the show with Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Ruth Madeley, Jemma Redgrave, and Alexander Devrient are returning from their previous work on Doctor Who.
