Doctor Who legend Tom Baker, 91, reflects on time in TARDIS after receiving MBE: “It was a real honour”

Tom Baker, famous for playing Doctor Who, recently received an MBE and celebrated by wearing his original Fourth Doctor outfit to the ceremony.

The actor, known for playing the Doctor on television from 1974 to 1981, received an MBE for his contributions to the industry. Pictures showed him celebrating with iconic props from the show, including the TARDIS, a Dalek, and the robot dog K9.

It’s wonderful how people still remember my time as the Doctor, even after 34 years! I was surprised to realize it had been so long when I recently had the chance to step back into the TARDIS and wear my favorite scarf again.

Last year, it was revealed that actor Tom Baker would receive an MBE. This recognition celebrates his popular portrayal of the Fourth Doctor on Doctor Who, a role he played from 1974 to 1981, a period many fans consider the show’s best era.

Ninety-one-year-old Baker (who will celebrate his 92nd birthday in January) previously chatted with TopMob in 2023 for the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who.

When asked what advice he had for Ncuti Gatwa, the latest Doctor, he explained that it’s actually better not to know too much about the role. He emphasized that being kind and good-hearted is also key to playing the Doctor.

The key to success is being supportive and giving with your fellow performers. This makes things much easier because you don’t have to constantly take the lead.

He doesn’t seek out meetings with other incarnations of the Doctor. It’s not out of spite, he explains, but he admits to feeling a little disdainful – though only mildly so.

He pointed out that no one has truly failed in the role of Doctor Who. While acknowledging the need to be fair to everyone, he confidently stated that he himself hadn’t failed either.
