Although the potential Disney and BBC collaboration for Doctor Who has ended, the show’s future isn’t in doubt. BBC executives have confirmed they’re dedicated to continuing the long-running sci-fi series. However, they need time to plan the next steps, as the recent seasons with Russell T. Davies didn’t perform as well as expected. They’re currently figuring out the best direction for the show, which could still involve Davies in the future.
On the Half the Picture podcast, Doctor Who composer Murray Gold shared a surprising detail about the upcoming Christmas special, which continues the story from the Season 15 finale. He explained that showrunner and writer Russell T. Davies has created several different versions of the episode, depending on how certain plot points resolve. Gold admitted that’s all he knows, and he wasn’t even sure if he was supposed to share that information.
Why Would You Write Multiple Scripts For a Single Episode?
The latest season of Doctor Who ended with a surprising twist: Billie Piper, famous for playing Rose Tyler, appeared as the Doctor regenerated into a new form. This unexpected reveal has left fans wondering about her role – is she truly the new Doctor, or is something more complicated going on with the timeline? We’ll likely find out in this year’s Christmas special, though the showrunners probably already have the answers planned.
As a fan, it seems pretty clear to me that the multiple endings they’ve filmed are about giving the BBC options for the future of Doctor Who. We all know the show isn’t going anywhere, and the BBC wants to take their time figuring out what’s next. The thing is, the Christmas Special’s ending will definitely hint at that future, so they need to be ready to move quickly. It just makes sense that they’d film a few different possible endings to cover all the bases!
Even the writers of Doctor Who acknowledge that the recent seasons on BBC and Disney+ haven’t quite worked as intended. It’s crucial for those in charge to understand what went wrong and fix it, instead of repeating the same errors. It appears Murray Gold has unintentionally given the BBC’s leadership the breathing room they need to address these issues.
What do you think – is it time for a new person to lead Doctor Who, and if so, who would you recommend? Share your thoughts in the comments and join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum!
