Doctor Who producer addresses series future – defends “stories that reflect the world in which we live”

Doctor Who fans are excited about the upcoming spin-off, ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea,’ slated for next year, but it’s still unclear what’s happening with the main Doctor Who series.

The BBC has stated that the show will definitely return, even if they can’t renew their partnership with Disney. However, the exact timing and format of the new series are still unknown while they await news about the Disney deal.

Jane Tranter, who leads the production company Bad Wolf, recently spoke to Broadcast magazine to clarify what’s happening with the show, as rumors about its future continue to circulate.

According to Tranter, the decision about the show’s future now rests with BBC Studios and Disney+. He clarified that Bad Wolf will not be informed first, and he’s relieved to say this outcome is beyond his control, and he doesn’t take responsibility for it.

According to the article, Tranter thinks Disney will decide whether to proceed with the deal based on financial considerations and data analysis.

Tranter also addressed the criticism that the show was ‘too woke,’ a label some viewers and media outlets had used.

Responding to the discussion, Tranter explained that Disney+ hasn’t given him the same impression of inclusivity as the current buzz around Doctor Who. He emphasized their commitment to telling stories that represent everyone, not just a select few, and accurately reflect the world we live in.

Russell T Davies, the showrunner, also talked about this earlier this year on a BBC Radio 2 program dedicated to the show.

He mentioned that diversity always seems to be a topic of conversation. He also noted online criticism accusing them of focusing too much on diversity and ‘wokeness,’ and bringing in related, often contentious, issues.

I simply don’t have the patience for this. I’m too busy to deal with it. What others see as diversity, I see as simply being welcoming to everyone.

The latest season of Doctor Who concluded with a shocking twist: Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor regenerated, and Billie Piper unexpectedly appeared from the energy released during the transformation.

Everyone’s been wondering what this all means, but we’ll have to be patient before we get clear answers.
