Jane Tranter, an executive producer for Doctor Who and the founder of Bad Wolf Studios – the company producing the series – has responded to claims that the show is facing its lowest point ever.
The comment originated from Robert Shearman, the writer of a famous 2005 Doctor Who episode called ‘Dalek.’ He shared his thoughts about the show’s fifteenth series finale in an interview with Doctor Who Magazine.
The latest season concluded with a shocking twist: Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor transformed into a character portrayed by Billie Piper.
Billie Piper famously played Rose Tyler in the main *Doctor Who* series, including the episode directed by Shearman. She also appeared as The Moment in the show’s 50th anniversary special, so her return as the Doctor is unexpected and raises questions.
After a dramatic ending to the latest episode, and with no news about when the next season of Doctor Who will be made, fans are understandably worried. Writer Pete Shearman has expressed concern that the surprising change in the Doctor’s form felt like a definitive ending, leading some to believe the show is effectively over.
Jane Tranter addressed recent rumors about the show’s cancellation in an interview with BBC Radio Wales, as reported by Deadline. She confirmed that reports of Doctor Who ending are untrue.
According to Tranter, someone said things were ‘as dead as we’ve ever known,’ which he found both impolite and inaccurate.
Tranter explained the situation and how the new show set on the sea will fit into the larger story, saying:
The plan for Doctor Who is straightforward: the BBC and BBC Studios have teamed up with Disney Plus to create 26 episodes.
We’ve released 21 out of the 26 episodes so far. There are 5 more episodes of ‘The War Between The Land And The Sea’ still to come.
Eventually, we’ll all be involved in deciding what the future holds for Doctor Who.
Tranter explained that the franchise is quite established, having existed for 60 years and been continuously running for the past 20 years since its revival in 2005. He believes that after such a long time, some changes are natural and even necessary – nothing should remain static indefinitely.
Things are definitely going to change with the show, but one thing’s for sure: the Doctor will return. We all just need to be patient and see when and who takes on the role next.
It looks like patience is key right now. While you wait, enjoy these exclusive videos featuring the cast and crew of Doctor Who, available below. We’ll share more updates as soon as we have them.
